  • Inappropriate or amusing food names

    First has to be something that just appeared on our local hypermarkets shelves;

    Spotted Dick by Heinz, no less

    A suet putting from the UK with (usually) currants, usually served over custard.

    Picked up a can for our middle son's 'weird stuff' collection. It'll probably go right next to the chocolates shaped like a puckered anus.

      Spotted Dick is a very ancient suet pud. Delicious if made properly, probably 'orrible canned. It is in the Oxford Dictionary, but no etymology or dating. Almost certainly much, much older than the use of dick as, well, a dick. The recipe was found in The Modern Housewife, published by Soyer in 1849. Apparently named that because the raisins on the surface give the pud a spotty appearance. Aka spotted dog and spotted duff (info Penguin Historical Slang). The other use of dick is certainly 20th c.

      Doesn't shock me.

        It says microwaveable - but isn't that a metal container?

          You can put metal in a microwave, it's just not a good idea

            Now I know why they make instructions:
            1. take out of can, put on microwavesafe plate
            2. put in microwave
            3. make sure the cat is not in the microwave
            4. turn on microwave
            5. wait for the beep (or ding)
            6. open the door of the microwave
            7. wear heat protective gloves
            8. ...

            But back on topic: I've never tried it, but I gather it is a well known dish in the UK. To me, the name actually first makes me think about food other than anything else...

              It's a very indulgent pudding, very likely to clog the remaining flow of the arteries. Many here think of it as an old school-dinners pudding. It is delicious.
