  • Zabbix for system monitoring

I've been playing with Zabbix for a week. Zabbix is a system monitoring solution that can monitor Linux and Windows server with installable agent as well as websites, switches, VMs and SNMP.

It has a web interface with overview, where you can add hosts, monitored items, triggers and actions. It can notify you of problems (for example when CPU usage exceeds treshold) via email or even SMS as well as apply commands like restarting a service.

You can install server on Debian/Ubuntu or Centos/RedHat. 1 CPU core, 1GB RAM, 16GB disk is fine for start.

It is however not something you can get up and running in 3 hours with zero prior knowledge. You need knowledge of Linux system administration. If you are starting to get that server sprawl and have been looking for automated monitoring I recommend you give it a try.
