Woman held on $2 million bond in infant stabbing

A woman charged with attempted murder was ordered held on $2 million bond today after police found a 9-month-old boy stabbed in the head in a residence in northwest suburban Harvard Friday morning.

Claudia Mejia, 36, of the 500 block of West McKinley Street in Harvard, is being held in McHenry County Jail after being charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery of a child, Harvard Police Chief Dan Kazy-Garey said in a release late Friday.

Police were called to a home on West McKinley Street about 10 a.m. Friday following a call regarding someone bleeding from the face, according to the release. Police found the infant with his face bleeding, and he was treated by Harvard paramedics and taken to Mercy Harvard Hospital in Harvard before being airlifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Harvard police and the McHenry County Major Investigative Assistance Team looked into the attack and arrested Mejia.

Police did not release details regarding what Mejia's relationship to the infant is or what they believe led to the boy's injuries.
