        BSplayer (http://www.bsplayer.org/)
        VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)
        MPC-HC (http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/)
        Zoom (http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml)
        DivX (http://www.divx.com/)

Not all are totally free, but they at least have a free player version. VLC is the easiest for non-AV technical people to use, as all the CODECs are built in to it so there's no need to mess with third-party CODEC installations.

A vote for MPC-HC, mainly because it has DXVA support (video decoding using gpu) and also has codecs built in.

I typically use VLC and MPC-HC. Some of my videos work well in one and not well in the other. For music I use Foobar2000.

Thank you all. I have been using WMP and DirectVobSub to view subtitles, but recently I came across a couple of movies that would not play if DirectVobSub was in use. If the sub file was in the same folder with the movie the DivX file type in WMP will keep getting disactivated. Media Player Classic is not affected.
The reason that I have mentioned Kantaris is that it does not require installation. However it is very poor on file types.

                    Just so you now know

VLC has DXVA for almost everything now, ATi and Nvidia support, and even Intel integrated to a point I think

I still prefer MPC-HC for the shaders, and have VLC as a backup.

When I tested it (half a year ago or so), VLC didn't work out of the box with DXVA on an ION platform. MPC-HC did... Good to hear that is should have improved now...

I'm haveng problems with highlighting in VLC. The highlight color changes to grey on the right of the screen. Perhaps I'm missing some setting ?
