What were the first vehicles you owned?

My first bike was a 1932 250 cc BSA, with hand gear change on the right side of the tank and girder forks. It was a good machine with one weakness: the push rod for the clutch wore quickly: needed changing every 5000 miles and adjusting every 1000.

My first car was a 1936 Hillman Minx with a 1200 cc side valve engine. The max rpm was 2500 rpm! I once got it up to 60 mph going downhill and a following wind on the Military Road between Carlisle and Newcastle (old Roman road following Hadrian's wall, with several dead straight stretches).

Those were the days when motoring was an adventure! Wish I still had those vehicules!

1984 Vauxhall Nova, 1.2L. Probably felt slower than your Hillman Minx

    I can't complain - it was a gift!

    Now: 2000 Mondeo 16V 2.0 - way faster & a lot more toys
(a damn sight more to insure too!)

      first:

      1971 Ford F100 4x4 with a 360ci and 1982 Bronco Lariat limited edition with a 351

      now:

just my trusty 1.8L 81hp 1990 vw Fox GL
(many clutch, transmission, strut assembly, and axel replacements later, I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that maybe it's not the best choice to hang offroad with the big boys
      )
Yes I drive a 13yr old Volkswagen; Yes I'm a dirt poor college student; Yes every tank of gas is more $$ than the value of my car, but it is FUN to drive, so I don't care about your ego or how much your car cost, if you insist on going the exact same speed in the passing lane as the car next to you for 10 minutes, stop being a self righteous ass, move the hell over and just let me by!!!

        First: 1993 Saturn SL1 1.9L 85hp machine. After 311 000km I still got 42mpg+, twas a great machine, too bad I crashed it @ 160kph.

Second: 1992 Toyota Tercel, a tank but consumed oil like it was gas. Should have kept it, it didn't cost me much to maintain.

Now: 1994 Saturn SL2, Saturns are boring now, wish I had more money so I can get myself a VW Jetta.

            Lessee...

There was a Go-Cart. Hell of a thing, went WAY too fast since my granddad (who was the guy who built the thing - amongst other farm vehicles and work vehicles, man was a genius with metal piping and wheels) didn't believe in speed limiters... so as fast as I could make the engine go (and we upgraded it). Thing topped out around 45mph, I think. Faster than a moped, I know that.

Then a moped, for the sake of mobility - since Go-Carts aren't street legal. Had to get around town...

Then a Cutlass Cruiser Wagon. 1986/1987. First year they went electrical in the engine, so everything was a "module" and cost $2000 to repair. Bleh. That got T-Boned by a crazy lady in the parking lot of Micro Center and was a wash.

Moved "up" to a Ford Escort. Also a 1986. What a piece. The head gasket finally gave out, and on an Escort that makes the car "totaled".

Next came a very reliable Toyota Corolla. Also a 1986. Amazing, I stayed with cars from 1986 until I got the Volvo!

Bought Julie the Volvo after that (1995/1996 960).

Then traded the Toyota for my Brother-In-Law's Acura while he was at school. Fun little car, the Integra. Also a late 80's model. Heh.

            Then I bought the Bimmer. (1993 325is).

            End of story.

              1964 volkwagon go-kart
              1976 Chev Montecarlo
1988 Ford mustang lx 5.0 (still have this one - just SLIGHTLY modified)
1984 Mercury Capri RS (winter beater)
1985 Ford Ranger (winter beater- later upgraded to 5.0)
1984 Lincoln LSC (bought this for my better half)
1997 Ford F150 4x4 regular cab 4x4 off road package
1995 Tuarus SHO (for the better half)
1999 Ford Ranger 4x4 extended cab (still have this)
2001 Lincoln Navigator (still have this - wife drives it mostly)

Most fun I ever had was the 1985 ranger after I put the 5.0 fuel injected motor in it. Looked stock but many a corvette filled my rear view mirror.
Yeah, well I'm gonna build my own lunar space lander! With blackjack aaaaannd Hookers! Actually, forget the space lander, and the blackjack. Ahhhh forget the whole thing!

First car was a 1986 Escort GT, unlike Gurms experance....it was great car. It was my dad's then I bought it off him for my first car. When I got rid of it, it had 140K on it. I sold it in August of 1993 right before going in the army. Fastforward to 1998, I was working part time in an auto parts store while going to school and my Old Escort pulls up...still running. The car had over 220K on it at that point in time. The guy has replaced the headgasket (thus not a kiss of death) and was pretty happy with it. It looked like crap, but then again it was over 12 years old at that point.

When I was out of the Army, I got a 1998 Mustang GT. Not a bad car, but I just got tired of it...it was unconfertable to drive for long distances (my commute to work is about 40 minutes or so) and the Insurance sucked on it. I got rid of it last year and got my current car.

My current car is 2002 SVT Focus. I really like the car....its confertable to drive and has about 85% of the same performance that my Mustang had, but with worlds better handeling and I dont have that OMG I'm gonna die feeling when it snows out like I had with the Mustang

No idea what I want to get next though...the Mazada 6 looks nice, though Ford is supposed to come out with car based off it in a couple years and it looks pretty good so that might be an option. If I dont change my mind before then
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Now I see why I get confused. There is a gt40 and GT98 here. Never seen them both in the same place before.

First car was a 1976 (->1966<-) Chevy Caprice, a hand-me-down from my parents.

Went in the service and bought a Honda 300 rebuilt it and crashed it.

After that, bought a 1968 Z28 Camaro from a friend and put in and modified a new 350 solid-lifter Vette engine (LT1). Serious hp! Never found the top end of that car. These were the good old days when cars were cars and men were glad of it

Bought a 1973 454 Chevelle new and added hp to it until it broke the chassis. Bad car. The muffler and the tail pipe fell off the car as I was leaving the dealership. The 454 made the front end wallow like an old Cadillac. Needed to put oversize springs on the front and Koni shocks all around to get it to handle. Took everything off that car that wasn't necessary for the engine to operate.

Went through a series of Hondas until now when I just purchased my first 4x4, a 2000 4Runner (3.4 L) with 30k miles. Great vehicle. I keep getting the urge to put a Toyota supercharger on it.

                      1. 1967 Chevy Biscayne (stripped down no frills Impala from a highway patrol auction).
                      2. 1978 Honda Hawk motorcycle (in storage).
                      3. 1971 Camaro (hopeless rust-bucket but I loved that car).
                      4. 1979 Malibu (bought from mom).
                      5. Second 1978 Honda Hawk for parts (also in storage).
                      6. 1987 Taurus (given to me by sister-in-law's husband just to be rid of).

                      Wife's cars:

                      1. 1968 Buick Special (bought from parents).
                      2. 1980 Honda Twinstar motorcycle (didn't need but had to have).
                      3. 1978 Pontiac Sunbird (POS but fun to drive).
                      4. 1983 Pontiac 1000 (Chevette clone).
                      5. 1986 Taurus wagon (finally starting to go to pieces on us).

ooops forgot my 1965 289 mustang notchback - just needed to much TLC, and I didn't have the time or place to keep it.
Had to part with it for a song.
gt98: before I bought my 88 stang I called the insurance co to
see the diff between the LX and the GT. the GT was almost double .
The LX had the same suspension/drivetrain and was 300 lbs lighter and therefore quicker.
                        So I bought the LX.
As for handling, if you can get a copy of 88 road and track it listed the mustang as the second quickest vehicle through the slalom.
In second gear at almost redline, you could use the power to steer the rear end through the corners.

Can this be correct? According to your birthdate, your first car was built when you were 23 years old, your parents drove it awhile before giving to you as a hand-me-down?

As it happens, my first car was a 1976 Chevy Impala (practically the same car) which was a hand-me-down from my parents as well, but I'm ten years younger than you are.
