  • Is there a cure?

I'm not sure if there are any help groups or counselling for this particular aliment yet but I guess a pseudo scientific name will have to do for now. Its called 'how do I stop tweaking & overclocking my PC'. My god I have this unstoppable urge to stick heat sinks & fans on everything inside that steel beige box (well it was beige but now its been sanded down and has four coats of black spray paint & three coats of clear enamel). Someone stop me please this can't be healthy!
Can you stick small heat sinks on SDRAM modules?...arh.
Is anyone suffering from the same predicament because I would like to start a O/C anonymous group.
We can all sit around drinking coffee and smoking copious amounts of cigarettes and discuss the relative merits of sticking a ATX tower in a refrigerator while submersing an encapsulated cpu in a bucket of liquid nitrogen in an attempt to create zero resistance in the integrated circuits. Even better, we could get in to the fridge with the PC wearing a heavily insulated body suit but just have to tops of our skulls exposed. Then turn the thermostat down to zero Kelvin so our brain would take on superconductor like properties in an effort to anticipate every possible outcome another player on UT might think of and frag their arse before they even have a chance to fire off a round.
Is there any chance of redemption? Are people out there feeling the same way or am I just a lone freak?
    Cheers.

Consider this the official beginning of the Matrox Users Hardware Addict Support Group.

Hello, my name is Charles, and it has been 11 days since my last upgrade.

I'm glad to have found this group. I've really reached rock bottom. Last week I had to reinstall my operating system for the 173rd time, because I decided to move my os to a separate physical disk from my video cap drive. Not that there were any major problems with the old setup. But I read a FAQ that suggested it, and well, it nagged me incessantly until I made the change.

To make matters worse, I sometimes quit doing real, productive work and reboot my computer, just so I can enter the bios screen and change settings whose Taiwanese translations make their actual function completely mysterious. But, I lay awake at night wondering, just how much speed can I gain by changing the "Super-Mega-CPU-to-DRAM-PRECAS-Charge-Caching" from "USC" to "UCLA"? 0.5%? 1%? I want to know. No, I MUST know.

Truth: I'm currently running my 128MB Crucial 7.5ns memory (part number CT16M64SD75) at CAS 2, when Crucial clearly states it is only rated to CAS 3 at 133MHz FSB! I'm so ashamed, but I just can stop myself. I mean, it's even stable. It's as if my computer is tempting me!

Thanks for listening. I'll just sit here as sob quietly, while others share their stories.

Thank-you for your input Charles, it quite a relief that I'm not alone. I feel for your plight as my Windows98SE CD is becoming worn out too. Ah Bios settings… something I’m most familiar with. I understand that need you speak of, that need to find out what this & that does. I had an ‘incident’ with that not too long ago however it was not quite as fortuitous as your adventure.
In my ranting I forgot to introduce myself.
Hi my name is josh and my last upgrade was 2 days ago when I had to pick up my new RAM (Crucial 128MB PC133 SDRAM 7E Cas2 x2) upgrade from the FedEx warehouse because I missed them the day before when they dropped by. I was so anxious to get it in my system (they weren't going to deliver till Monday! bastards!) that I got up early on Saturday especially to drive 120km so I could start o/cing immediately. I ended up o/cing my p3 550e@759 (FSB 138x5.5). Of course I conducted benchmarks before and after the upgrade (SiSoft2000 memory bench before with 160MB generic PC100@100FSB SDRAM: CPU/MEM-270MB/s, FPU/MEM-305MB/s. After with Crucial 256MB PC133@138FSB SDRAM: CPU/MEM-381, FPU/MEM-456).
My last tweak was a couple of hours ago when I realised that there were no holes in the front of my ATX case for the exhaust fan to suck air in through. I feel so ashamed that I didn't have the right tools to complete the job that and I had resort to using my precision screwdriver set (2.4mm flathead screwdriver) to cut the holes in the plastic. It took me quite awhile and now I have blisters on my fingers from the effort. I also noticed that while working I had scratched some of the black paint from my case so I had to 'touch up' the affected areas with a black permanent marker so as not to mar the over all aesthetic beauty of the box. Sniff...
Now I’m not so patiently awaiting the arrival of my Swiftech MC370-3 peltier cooler so I can squeeze some more FSB action out of my system.
And Charles, thank-you for listening, it’s only together that we may beat this monster…
      Cheers.

        Hi,

Im Thomas,20 Years old, and I'm addicted to hardware Overclocking.
I can't do or think on any other. In fact I just recently overclocked my Casio watch.
If i read something which can make my system faster in any way, i must test it out. I even overclocked my PS/2 Port before.
Also I have an Athlon 650Mhz for some days now, and I couldn't help and bought a GFD Device for it only for letting it run at 750Mhz, more and the core would burn out.
Some time ago I had a backfall and tested the optimum memory Performance settings in the Bios by running a couple of benchmarks every day for 2 weeks. After 3 Weeks I decided to buy another System, the Athlon.

But now I'm strong, I know there are people with the same problems as i have! I'll will NOT test the performance gain of any switch my bios let me set. (The last test runs on my old system give a total performance gain of 2%, wow!)

Thanks again to Mega, you are a tribute to us all. Your strength and determination is an example for all that this disease isn't untreatable.
Oh yeah, you were spot on Paulcs about the memory, I was pleasantly surprised . Maybe Via Apollo 133A boards aren't so bad after all.
          Cheers

Hi, my name is Greg and its been 2 days since my last upgrade. Bought a new mouse and motherboard for second machine.

Ive found myself contemplating growing/selling drugs to pay for this horraible habit! I would never use either, my addiction is expensive and harmful enough as it is... dont need to add drugs/alchol to the mix.

Hello, my name is Brian and it has been 7 days since my last upgrade. I have had the misfortune to update enough parts on my main computer so that I could justify (at least in my own mind) a new computer for my 3-year-old daughter from the spare parts. She previously had a Macintosh. I built a PIII 600 for her on a BE6-2 MB so that I could run SETI on another computer. She is now able to run her Winnie the Pooh and Reader Rabbit programs at slightly sub-light speed. My wife is jealous of the new computer and, I'm afraid, request I update her PIII 450. This should provide me with enough spare parts to enable me to build a back-up computer for myself. I'm sorry, I just can't stop. I own a computer supply store and am not showing a profit owing to my removing stock from the back room to upgrade the various computers in my house.

              Please help.

                Hi I'm Paul, 46 yrs old(you "don't" outgrow this thing)...LOL

I found a temporary cure, my wife and I bought a house. So now all my extra time and money go towards fixing and remodeling the house. My last computer upgrade was a month ago - VGA and Printer switch boxes to share monitors and printer.

I thought I was over this but I just ordered a larger fan and motor for the Swamp Cooler(air conditioner)for our house.

Oh!!No!! Paul's really Nucking Futs now!!! He's overclocking and cooling his house.

                Sad but true,
                Paul

Careful Greg about that path. If you undertake this endeavour you’ll just end up with more money to build a second, third or fourth system just so you can crunch more WUs. My god, if you go down that road you’ll have to think about proper networking solutions, Internet sharing, terminals in the toilet to surf the net, cooling solutions, a proper sound setup to include all the new PC, new amplifiers & speakers, back up generator and UPS for all the systems…the list just keeps going on & on.
Brian we all sympathise with your situation. I admire your efforts to upgrade your 3 year old daughters' system (keeping in mind your ulterior seti@home motive), however as you are obviously the role model for your daughter, aren't you afraid of passing on this affliction to the next generation?
As Brian has shown us, this powerful addiction can have detrimental effects at home (a wife jealous of her daughter’s machine) & at work (cutting into Brian’s profit margins so he can get his hardware fix)
                  Be Strong People!
                  Cheers.

Hi my name is Raefer and I'm an OC addict.
However due to financial constraints my last upgrade was one month ago (Plextor 8x4x32 burner that can copy anything using CloneCD after I updated firmware to 1.07 notwhitstanding that my previous burner died during a firmware update at the hands of a dying keyboard). Being unable to buy new parts has left me in a serious state of OC withdrawal. I'm happy to know there are others like me out there. I find myself suggesting to friends that they upgrade there machines even when totally unnecessary just so I can OC them. Trying to figure out how to OC SoundCards.

DentyCracker you have illustrated an aspect of this madness we haven't touched on much yet. I'm with you, I can't help advising friends (urge and plead would be better words) to upgrade their CPU, MB, RAM, HD etc. Now my friends generally won't let me near their systems in the fear i might make their system unstable... Ha. What do they know (probably sanity).

HAHAHA Paul! Overclocking your house. You are hopeless!

My name is Andy and it's been 19 hours since my last overclock. I increased my FSB by 3 MHz yesterday.

My previous upgrade was 256M of Cas2 Micron PC133.

I'm now on the verge of buying some really big really fast hard drives to replace my current ones.

                        I'm sick and need help.

3 days ago I upgraded my POS intel heatsink and fan to a Golden Orb. Small upgrade I know, but it is a result of all of the previous upgrades that I've done in the last three weeks. Hmmm, lets see... New ATX case with 250W power supply, PIII 600e (now overclocked to 850), Asus P3VX4 motherboard, 128 megs PC133 ram.

My problem is not so much that I have to have the fastest or the best, but I must have one of everything. My office is litteraly filled with gadgets connected to my computer that I use maybe (and I stess maybe here) once a month. I am currently awaiting my newest addition to the system, a pressure sensitive pen tablet. I can assure you that this purchase wasn't made because of necesity, but simply because I DONT HAVE ONE.

Paul, I will soon know what it's like to have a new house to spend money on rather than my computer. However, since I'm (I'm, meaning my company) building my new condo, I have already been able to start the computer related spending early during the construction phase. Ever get tired of searching for an extra plug? No problem, just add four plug outlets (all on separate circuits of course) right next to where your computer desk will go. Worried about networking to different rooms? No problem, run cat5 cable everywhere! Worried about the furture? No problem, run conduits all over the house so that incase you do ever get that fibre optic backbone installed in your house, you can just pull the lines through to where ever you want them (ok, might be pushing it there). If you really want to talk sick though, listen to this. I have installed some ductwork in the wall right next to where my computer will sit. In the ceiling, I have a 80cfm fan that will be drawing cold air from the outside, and blowing it directly into my computer case. (I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada and in the winter, we can get to about 40 below.) Kryotech, eat your heart out!!!

I know, hard to believe, maybe I'll take some pictures so that you guys can see.

By the way, don't tell my building inspector about the duct work, it's completely agaist code

                            Later,
                            Cmag

Hmmm... Paul & Brett, you two are a bit of a worry. Using ones experience in one field to find solutions/answers in others is not a bad thing & at time can be quite brilliant. However Paul this seems not the case (although we all appreciate your tweaking efforts), because since you cannot access your system while fixing your house you have substituted house remodelling instead. I wonder how this will affect you when you have more time for the PC (probably want to stick a air conditioner in the back of the ATX box)
I understand your need (Brett) to (or the lack there of in older houses) of enough plugs/connectors etc but trying to future proof your house (this must be an oxymoron in the computer industry) is well… Hey if its good enough for Bill Gate (I heard he had gapping holes in the walls of his house for couple of years until plasma screens became available) then its good enough for you.
I know I mentioned Bio over/clocking, but Brett I was kidding. Sticking a blower inside the house while pulling freezing air from outside…, this is insane. You purpose to stick your thermal underwear + various woollen items on every time you need to use the PC? What about condensation working it way onto the ICs. Regardless I’d love to see photos of this experiment.
                              Cheers.
