  • G400: Crusher/Massive

I think this is it for a while. All tests were run in 16-bit, sound disabled, with a fresh install of Quake2. I have every reason to believe Vsync was disabled by default as well.

    G400 Vanilla, Powerdesk 5.13, PIII 500, 384 Mb RAM.

    Crusher 800x600 - 37.0, 37.6, 37.9
    Crusher 1024x768 - 35.4, 36.1, 36.4

    Massive 800x600 - 54.3, 54.9, 55.0
    Massive 1024x768 - 51.4, 51.7, 51.9

There were odd lighting effects in 1024x768.

The Massive and Crusher demos are brought to you by their creator, Brett "3 Fingers" Jacobs.

Thanks paul for the massive1 & crusher benchmarks. I have a p3-550 and set my TNT2 at 125/160 (standard g400 speed).

    Pauls G400 benchmarks
    Crusher 800x600 - 37.0, 37.6, 37.9
    Massive 800x600 - 54.3, 54.9, 55.0

    armybobs TNT2 benchmarks
    Crusher 800x600 - 51.0, 51.3, 52
    Massive 800x600 - 72.0, 72.4, 72.5

damn, thats a pretty large difference between the two. We should look at massive1 more then crusher. Crusher has a lot more geometry so the extra 50mhz of my cpu should play a little bit more role. lucky for us with todays CPUs quake2 is more fillrate bound & driverbound then it is CPU bound.

Still looks like matrox has some work to do on getting some more speed out of the ICD. Its to bad, i'm ready to ditch this tnt2-ultra for a G400 (better overall feature set & image quality) but being the deathmatch freak I am it be hard.

I also have worries about Matrox updating there drivers. The G200 official ICD just came out a year after the g200 did. Were all talking about the G400, think about how bad that sounds. As a consumer it doesn't give me much faith in purchasing a G400.

Its just to bad matrox STILL can't get there ICD up to par. I guess kudos out to nVidia for just kicking ass at OGL.

This is a classic example of where fps is NOT the end-all and be-all. 37 fps is still absolutely playable, in fact, we would all be a lot happier if we only jugded games on how they played, how good they looked, not on differences that aren't noticable. Once your above 35fps, then any higher is meaningless! I laugh when Voodoo3 owners point out that they get 160 fps in 640X480, whereas the G400 only gets 60 or so, SO WHAT! your gaming expereince is the same, you can't tell that the game is running faster, cause as many frames are being drawn as is necessary. Ever notice how fast Q2 timedemo is?, that's how fast you would have to play to notice the difference.

I overclocked the PIII to 560 MHz, just a little higher than armybob's PIII 550, and, for the sake of comparison, ran 3 Finger's Massive demo again. Here we see the magic number of 60 fps in 16-bit, 800x600, and in a deathmatch situation.

        Massive 800x600 - 60.7, 61.7, 61.6
        Massive 1024x768 - 55.0, 55.4, 55.6

I think this is it for my OpenGL benchmarking, at least until we see new drivers.

I don't have any 800x600 rates for ya, but I've got some 1024x768 figures.

          Voodoo3 3000 not O/C, Celeron 464, 128MB CAS2, Sound ON, VSync OFF, gl_polyblend 0.

          Massive 1024x768 - 71.3, 72.6, 73.9
          Crusher 1024x768 - 47.9, 48.9, 48.9

Quantum, trust me when I say 35-60fps does make a difference. At 35fps, when it lags, it'll drop down below 30, which you can see, when it lags from 60, it might drop down to 40, but that's still in the smooth range. Remember these figures are only averages, if we were to see the "worst" figures, ie, the worst fps rate pumped out by the card during the test, it would be a lot more meaning full.

Quantum you're missing the point. See I am a pretty hardcore DMer & I have been since quake1 was released. I play on servers with a lot of people. I have a fast home connection so I prefer to play big games such as 24player q2CTF etc...FPS to me is a big thing. When I get into a 8way rocket battle I want it to be smooth. The main thing is "consistancy" If the G400 gave me consistant 40fps and never went below that but also never went higher that be THE SHIT. The reason why high FPS are important for "me" is because I don't want to be running at a smooth 40, boom see a few people and my fps drop to 20. It sucks.

G400 is a very capable card, there is no doubt about that its hardware kicks ass. Its really to bad there OGL software team can't keep up as good as there hardware team.

I think nVidia really deserves a lot of credit. No other consumer card manufacturer has done a full ICD with there amount of speed & compatibility. Their ICD runs every OGL app fast & virtually bug free. 3Dfx who has been doin there ICD since voodoo rush still isn't even close to nVidias in terms of robustness & overall speed. Try running a OGL screensaver on the V3 ICD. CRASH.

Matrox seems to be on the right track. I applaud them for continueing to work on it. If matrox can show me some more FPS increase with a updated driver soon i'd considering buying a G400max. Unfortunantly after the G200 fiasco with a supported ICD one year later, i have very little faith in matrox now. I *HOPE* that i'm wrong and they prove me wrong real soon. Their hardware team deserves to be #1 for the Quake DMing scene.

              Hey Guys,

I just wanted to do some comparisons between MAX speeds and default.... All I had a chance to do was crusher, but here's what I found:

Z Buffer @ 16bit in all tests. This is with PD5.13 (The released one)
              My system: PII-333 @ 515, 128mb, Abit BX6r2, plain G400 32mb Dual Head. I think vsync was off.

              Normal Speeds (Pstrip reports 126/168)

              800x600x32: 38.3
              1024x768x32: 35.2
              1600x1200x32: 21.6

              MAX Speeds (Pstrip reports 150.8/201.0)

              800x600x32: 38.7 (Increase of 1%)
              1024x768x32: 37.2 (Increase of 5%)
              1600x1200x32: 23.7 (Increase of 9%)

I Also have a few more results if anyone cares: (At Normal speed)
              800x600x16: 38.5
              1024x768x16: 37.7
              1600x1200x16: 28.1

Oh yeah, Sound was turned on, and was tested under Quake 2 v3.20.

I should also put that I have quite a lot running in the background (ICQ, winamp (not actually playing though), hardware monitor thingy, creative's disc detector thing etc etc)

              ------------------
              Cheers,
              Steve

You also HAD a few more results but what did you mean?
Were your G400 even more OC'd or what?

                Thanks,
                Micko

Sorry Micko - I didn't say, I've corrected it now.
I will try pushing this a little further (maybe up to 210mhz, past that I get too many artifacts)

This may make me look stupid but once again...
What is At standard speed(versus Normal)?

                    Micko,
It's not so important but anyway...

By all accounts the next driver series 5.2x will see some considerable speed increases at lower resolutions and with crusher/massive situations.

Ant is this official information from matrox or just speculation on your part? Also any timeframe?

I don't speculate, and if it was official Matrox PR I wouldn't believe it The 5.20 prototype is on the Matrox site available to registered developers. Don't know if the Beta Brats can comment on it.
