  • Q3&G400 - Why so slow fps?

I tried this timedemo 1 on my g400 and cel466 with following settings:

    graphics mode custom
    gl driver default
    gl extensions on
    video mode 1024*768
    color depth 32 bit
    full screen on
    lighting lightmap
    geometric detail high
    texture detail full
    texture quality 32 bit
    texture filter trilinear
    marks on walls yes
    ejecting brass yes
    dynamic lights yes
    light flares yes
    identify target yes
    high quality sky no
    sync every frame no
    high quality sound on

    I got only 13.7 fps in timedemo 1!!!! :-(

    Should it be better?

    Hi VPlin,

do u have an 32 meg or 16 meg G400?
If U have an 16 meg, u should try texture detail high (and not full)....

Here R my benchmarks, with an 16 MB G400.....

System : Intel Pentium II - 350 Mhz
    (3.5 * 112 = 392 Mhz)
    Mainboard : Abit BX 6, Rev. 2.0
    Memory : 96 MB SDRAM - PC 100
    Videoboard : Matrox G400 - 16MB
    o/c with g200clk /1 300
    HDD : IBM 6.4 GB (C: drive)
    : Quantum 6.4 GB (D: drive)
    : Quantum 6.4 GB (E: Drive)
    +-------------------------------------------------------------------+

    Quake II demo1.dm2

    Resolution: Framerate:

    800 * 600 * 16 61
    800 * 600 * 32 60
    1024 * 768 * 16 59
    1024 * 768 * 32 57

    Quake III q3testdemo1

    Resolution: Framerate Framerate
    (Bi-lineair): (trilineair):

    800 * 600 * 16 40 39,9
    800 * 600 * 32 39,1 38,6
    1024 * 768 * 16 39 38,5
    1024 * 768 * 32 34,1 29,7

    Expendable Timedemo

    Resolution: Framerate:

    1024 * 768 * 32 42 FPS
    1024 * 768 * 16 43 FPS

    All test run several times.

      I have 32MB version of G400.

You said that you got at 1024*768*32
34,1 fps on trilinear and texture detail high???

Do you believe that if I change this settings my fps will raise higher than you.
      Hey I have Celereon 466!

Can you send your q3 graphics setting step by step like I did in my first mail. I think that is only right way to discuss results!

        Hi vplin,

        I 4got 2 mention what options I used,
        here they R,

        graphics mode custom
        gl driver default
        gl extensions on
        video mode 1024*768
        color depth 32 bit
        full screen on
        lighting vertex
        geometric detail high
texture detail high (3rd option, if counting from left 2 right)
        texture quality 32 bit
        texture filter trilinear and bilinear
        marks on walls yes
        ejecting brass yes
        dynamic lights no
        light flares no
        identify target yes
        high quality sky no
        sync every frame yes
        high quality sound on

and I got 29,7 FPS with trilinear on.
Sorry, but my post lookes messed up.
        dunno why that is.... :-)

Annyway u should get better performance
        than 13.7 FPS......

Try mine settings instead, and C what difference it makes......

        Luck

          MarcelM,

Don't you think your scores are higher because you used vertex lighting. Lightmap's really a killer...

            Hi Jake,

            yeah, U R right.....
i tried it with lightmap instead of vertex, and performance dropped 2 19 FPS!!!

              Ok here it comes!

All the graphics settings were Full at 1024*768*32 except texture detail was
              high (not full).

              Results:

              Timedemo 1 : 20 fps
              Timedemo 2 : 26 fps

When I put sky off and bilinear (instead of trilinear)
              I got:

              Timedemo 1 : 25.9 fps
              Timedemo 2 : 29.8 fps

My system was Abit BE6, Cel466, G400 32MB SingleHead, 128MB RAM, WD 9.1GB Expert etc...
              No overclocking!

              Is it now looking better?

Thought I'd throw in my results as well.
                First the system:
                P2-300 oc'd to 450
                G400 32M OEM oc'd to 145/193

                Q3test setting
                1024x768
                32bit color
                32 bit texture
                bilinear
                max quality for textures
marks on wall etc on (no flares)

demo1----32.2 pretty similar to others that I've seen (except here, of course)
