  • Good news for a change (to Haig and the B-Boyz)

Just to be different I thought I'd post my success with the PD 5.13:

Using 4.51 couldn't run HL, or SiN or GLQuake with the G200. They wouldn't even *load*, had to use my V2. Could only run Q2 after installing the AMD 3DNow! drivers.

After installing 5.13, I've got HL running at 1024x768 in both OGL and D3D and SiN running at 1152X864.

I had previously done a reformat for unrelated reasons so these are the only games I've re-installed so far. Unreal and Q2 when I get home from work....!

This card finally looks like what I thought it was when I bought it last December! Yes, I know that sounds kinda like dammning with faint praise, but I'm willing to forgive the past--Matrox may be slow in living up to it's promises, but the promises are true, and that's what counts to me!

Thank you, Haig! Thank you, Beta-boiz! Without you and this forum I would never have been able to bear these difficult months of waiting and would have missed the literally jaw-dropping beauty of the HL intro movie on my stupendous G200 at a resolution and level of quality I could never hope to achieve on a V2 even in SLI. I'm really, really, *really* glad I still have my G200!

...Doesn't this sound like what they say happens after you have a baby?

Stay tuned...more good news as more games load!

Who just *likes* SiN, dammit, no matter what the reviewers say! and can now put her V2 in her roomie's new (in a way) K6-266 (be quiet, she doesn't play games! well, not like Half-Life, anyway, she's a bleem! kinda roomie) because now her [Soyo 5EMA, K6-2 333 not o/c, 256MB PC100 , Millennium G200 8MB SGRAM, Win98] works plenty good enough 'til she's saved the moolah for the G400/Athlon rig [drool, pant, drool... ]

Told ya there'd be more as more games load...

        Unreal.

1152X864 in D3D. A tiny bit hitchy, but otherwise runs like a dream. I'd post framerates if I knew how to get 'em...

"So **that's** what the waterfall looks like!"

Thanks again, guys, couldn't have done it without you!!

            Heya Holly !

FPS in Unreal are more simple than in Q2 ...

enter the console and type 'timedemo 1' [enter]

after that the intro scene (fly by) will run and report the highest, lowest and average FPS ... to disable use 'timedemo 0'

Btw, I was 'Markus Selchow' until this stoopid server lost about everything ...

Dammit I want my '+1500 posts' record back

grant88, the plain fact is that under bios 2.3 and 4.51 drivers, I couldn't even load
              -Unreal
              -Half-Life
              -SiN
-GLQuake or Q2 (without the Voodoo 2 I was using)

That's why I posted this thank you thread--so that Haig and the beta testers could see that their work had really helped somebody.

                Hi Motub (Holly?)

I am still at bios 1.6 and PD 4.51.
Does PD 5.13 improve Unreal's FPS and visual quality in D3D??

Hey Maggi--here's some of those Unreal timedemos, at least:

D3D scores (they look much crappier as numbers than they do on the screen, why is that?):

                  1280X1024: 8.476787
                  1152X864 : 10.449221
                  1024X768 : 12.985582
                  800X600 : 15.631360

OGL scores when I get home from work (just going now)

BTW, this is fun! I wanna do more!!!

YEah, Holly - I agree: The results you get back from unreal seem very low compared to how the game plays. Or I find 10-15fps playable...

Oh I have to agree. The timedemo in Unreal does suck. When I still had my G200 in my current machine I use to play Unreal on-line at 800x600x32-bit without any real problems. Now with the G400 I play it at 1024x768x32-bit with no problems at all.

I did some OGL Unreal testing, but it brought tears in my eyes.

                          Here's what I did:
                          -
                          Delete the complete Unreal directory.
Reinstall Unreal and patch it to 2.25f
Copied opengl32.dll to the Unreal dir.
                          -
                          Start Unreal.... crash
                          Start Unreal again
                          okay, it's working.
                          Quit Unreal
                          -
Disabled all programs running in the background, but for sound and PD5.13
                          -
                          Start Unreal
                          Options
                          Advanced Options
                          Take OGL for driver
                          Check OGL
                          Return to Unreal
Set brightness to 1.0 (still very dark)
                          -
                          Flyby? Okay, flyby.
I run timdemo 1 with sound on.
I run each cycle 3 times, get the best cycle.

                          here goes....

                          640x480x32 : 2.060777 fps
                          800x600x32 : 1.618176 fps
                          1024x768x32: 1.122675 fps
                          1280x1024x32: won't run, crashes Unreal.
                          1600x1200x16: won't run, crashes Unreal.

Hmmmmmmm... the d3d is coming later.

                          My system?
                          PIII-450, 256 Mb, Asus P2B (bios 1010.003), G200 - 8Mb OEM, Iiyama 17" A701GT (capable of 1600x1200x16 at 85 Hz, or so they say )

Don't try it Holly... please don't... it'll end up with you throwing your PC out of the window!!

Thanx Holly (and the others of course)

I don't have actual scores at hand, but I found some older ones done with PD4.51 on my famous Mystique G200 and Unreal was rev. 2.20.

                            Unreal V2.20 D3D mode - Timedemo 1
(Vsync off, truecolor, trilinear mipmapping, triple buffering)

                            512x384x32bpp
                            High 53.33
                            Low 13.22
                            Average 29.83

                            640x480x32bpp
                            High 39.85
                            Low 11.22
                            Average 23.10

                            800x600x32bpp
                            High 27.89
                            Low 8.32
                            Average 16.45

                            1024x768x32bpp
                            High 14.50
                            Low 4.91
                            Average 9.14

                            ...

I forgot to mention that after Unreal has crashed, it sometimes leaves a running task in the background, causing heavy slowdowns ...

check that with the taskmanager (ctrl-alt-del) and end that task before trying to restart Unreal.

I think that the scores that Jorden posted might be related to that 'phenomenon' ...
