  • It took awhile but persistence paid off

My friend has a 700 T-Bird on a Matsonic KT133 Mobo... he has had nothing with problems with it since he bought it in the summer.

He eventually broke down and asked me to fix it for him...

Anyone who has set up a T-Bird on a Via Chipset board and hasn't had any problems I envy you

Besides freezing at odd times... Memory Timing Problems... Self Corrupting Files... Low Hard Drive Access Speed... AGP not working... DirectX Problems... NIC Problems... CD Rom not being Recognized... and lots more...

    I have WON!!!!!!!!!

Never had that sense of accomplishment with my intel based boards... I kinda liked the challenge.

    I kick @$$

Oh and as for the persistance... it took about 3 days of tinkering... patching... setting changing... formatting... reinstalling... and drinking

Its been up and running for 2 days now and nary a problem in sight running Genome and Playing B@W or Unreal at the same time

Oh I shouldn't say I haven't ever felt that sense of accomplishment with my Intel Stuff... when I got my Cele II 566 that the guy at the store warned wouldn't do even 850 at 1.80 volts with good cooling to run now at 901 Stable at 1.90 volts and possibly more when my Peltier shows up... it felt good

hehe... welcome to cbmans "Boosting my own self esteem" thread

I set up my brothers 850 Mhz T-Bird on an Asus A7V (via chipset) mobo.... not one problem at all for the good 5 months he has had it... but then again, you didn´t need to hear that did ya´?

          Set up Abit KT7
          Turn on machine
          Boot to Win98
Find lots of stuff, reboot several times
          works fine

          OK so I lied
well not lied exactly but left out some stuff
(like how I needed to pencil my processor to a voltage of 1.85V and update the bios so it would recognise my Duron at 1.6V)

I was upgrading from a VIA MVP3 chipset mobo so not much had to be changed. Even win2k worked

If the foe s h i t s? Well you get the idea! heh-heh (JK)

ABIT KT7A-RAID, 4x20GB Maxtor DiamondMax in RAID 0 (Striping) for a single 80GB platform, with 256MB of PC150HSDRAM (which is actually slower than PC100HSDRAM - long story - and it's being replaced with their new Rev 3 stuff)...

And not a single problem as well. Played around with several installs trying to get max HD performance based on striping size. Still haven't tried all possible settings, but have stayed with 8KB stripe size, 32KB block size, so each disk block has to be written between all 4 HDs.

May try 16KB next, only takes 2 drives, may be more efficient.

Good job, I have spent many a week some nights *(intentional)* trying to get some old VIA stuff to work. Glad this one worked well outa the box.

Guyver, I did some serious benching on stripe sizes for both my two and three disk RAID 0 array. I used ZD WinBench 99 because it plays back actual application I/O to give you real world performance numbers. I found that I was actually better off with a two disk array of 64 KB striping and second best was the three disk array, also with 64 KB striping. I highly recommend running through WinBench and see how your system does with the app types that interest you (business and high-end). Sometimes a stripe size of 16 KB is best so it depends on how you mostly use your system.

                      Denty

If your chip runs anywhere as hot as this older T-Bird I am happy you got it up so high... Too bad about the 1Ghz... stupid MS... I say you write them and complain that their cheap software is making it so you aren't getting the best price/performance ratio and that you feel as if you are being cheated by their poor quality control and you are suing them for million upon millions of dollars and then you could settle out of court for two 1.33 Axia Chips with 512MB of PC2100 Ram and a Dual Athalon Mobo

I don't think it would work but hell it worked for that dumb lady or guy that spilt hot coffee on themselves from McDonalds

I put together my duron 700 on an Aopen AK33 board (686A southbridge, I feel good I went for the older board now with all the corruption bugs on 686B), GeFarce DDR, 128 meg ram, dvd drive, cd burner, 8gig samgsung crap drive, sblive value without any problems at all.

Just installed windows, via 4-in-1, video drivers, directx update, sound drivers (in that order I think).

Works perfectly, win 98 never crashes, games work fine.

Even my old matrox and Intel 740 (only supposed to work on intel chipsets) work perfectly on it.

Well the via 686b has got a bug so it ain't no surprise that poeple have problems with this. Some people report the same with the 686a.
If you want a guarenteed way of getting the KT133a chipset to work first time just install a video card and nothing else. Then saying that I've seen problems reported with poeple with just setup.

Easier as the 686a isn't supposed to suffer from the timing issues. Well Via aren't admitting to it.
