  • Strange networking prolem....

    Hi folks...

Got an odd situation happening on my office network...hopefully someone has an idea of whats going on...

We have 5 PCs networked here.
Each PC has a shared drive.
Each PC has the shared drive from each computer mapped, so any PC can get to any other PCs drive.
Today, one of the PCs can't reach one of the other's drives. When trying to get to that mapped drive, windows explorer just stops in its tracks, requiring a ctl+alt+del to end the task.
The same machine can get to any other drive.
Any other machine can get to the drive the one is having problems with.
Even the machine that can't be reached can get to the troubled machine.

    wassup with that??

    Ping, traceroute?
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

The problem machine can ping the other machine fine.
But trying to access that particular mapped drive does the lock-up.

Well, it just magically started working again.
Another mystery that will just go unsolved...'til it stops working again...

strange, are you using IP, NetBeui, or IPX? Could be something like a bad cable or port on the hub/switch or whatever you are using. it's probably not worth your time to track it down though unless it repeats itself several times.

Well, it started acting up again.
TCP/IP and NetBUI and IPX/SPX are all loaded.
Running the machines through a hub, which is hooked to a DSL router that handles IP assignments.
Don't think it's a cable, since the machine has no problem accessing any other machine.
My inclanation is to think it's some glitch with the hub...

                  All machines are running 98SE.
Net card in the problem machine is an intel on-moboard 10/100.

I'd get rid of two of the three protocols as they are just another unneeded process and they take up memory. Could possibly be part of the problem. Also, try manually assigning IP addresses and see if the prob goes away. Did you reboot the problem machine to see if the connections came back?

All machine have been rebooted...problem remains.
Cannot manually assign IP #'s, or it would confuse the router that runs our DSL, and assigns IPs to the various PCs.
Cannot remove extra protocols, or most machines will not see others without at least IPX/SPX running...

I ain't really all that worried about it....the only machine having probs belongs to a guy in the office who I told to stop loading all those free/shareware porn proggy's on, but he wont listen....his machine is only about 6 month old, and he has already loaded it with more porn crap than my office PC's HD could hold....just seems odd to me that other machines can see his shared HD, and his can see all others 'cept this one particular machine's....

Well, if he's loaded all that stuff on it, perhaps there might be a virus on the machine, or maybe the machine is low on resources? Also, why can't you assign static addresses? I wonder why a router wouldn't allow that.

I have one of those guys (a 20%er). Mine is the company PI, and is also an idiot.

Whats most likely happening is one of his downloaded porn thingees is opening, or trying to open a port so someone out in the big dirty world of the internet can take control of his machine.

I would be very very carfull with his connections if I were you.

Set up a dedicated firewall on his PC, something like ZoneAlarm, and see what naughty little proggys are trying to get out.

The best thing about ZoneAlarm is it tells you what is trying to get out, not only what is trying to get in (like most other software firewalls). If you notice something strange like notepad.exe trying to access the net, then you know something isnt playing by the rules.

Another thing you could do is turn on the 'prompt' setting under internet settings:secutity for all scripting. That will really piss him off, and he will stop going to those porn sites (worked for our PI anyway).

                          Ali

Howdy. I have that exact problem here at home. I have 6 computers accessing DSL through a Win2k Server box. The only solution I have been able to figure is individualling giving the two computers IP adresses. I know you can't do that, but that's the only way I have found so far. If you do figure out a better way please post it, as it annoys my dad to no end when he can't get to his files.

                              ??? HUH ???

If this is the case, then TCP/IP is not setup properly. I have setup dozens of networks using all Win98, combo's of different OS's and everything else in between, using only TCP/IP.

Go to Start -> Run and type in 'winipcfg', click OK. Select the NIC card from the drop down menu and click on the 'More >>' button. This will give you a detailed description of all the TCP/IP setting for each computer. The 2 main things you need to look at are IP address and Subnet Mask. Everything but the IP address should be identical on each computer. If not, that is problem #1.

I'll try and make this easy... Every computer MUST have the same Subnet Mask! Then, depending on the subnet mask, each computer should have similar IP address. i.e. if the Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0, then each IP address should have xxx.xxx.xxx.yyy IP addresses, where the X's are the same number among all IP's and the Y's are different. Make sure this is how all the IP's are setup. If you have any questions, post them...subneting can get tricky.

Once you are certain all the TCP/IP information is setup, then do the following (test it on 2 computers first, then work your way to the others once you get them working):

                              1) Remove IPX/SPX and NetBeui.

                              2) There should only be 4 things installed (since you probably don't have modems); they are, a) Your NIC card, b) TCP/IP, c) Client for Microsoft Networks and d) File and Print sharing for Microsoft Networks.

                              3) Set the Logon to (doing this from off the top of my head so ...) 'Microsoft Network Logon'. This will require them to logon whenever they reboot, tell them to deal with it.

                              4) Go to the 'Identification' tab (in Network Properties) and make sure each computer has it's own unique Computer Name and THE SAME Workgroup.

                              5) Click OK and Reboot.

This should take care of all your networking woes. If it doesn't, then someone has seriously jacked up their computer. This setup has worked flawlessly for me for years.
