  • Cheap 512 mb modules

Is it just here in Denmark that the price of 512 MB RAM modules have dropped significantly recently ?

    Now I can get 512 MB PC133 for dkr 998,- (app $130), while 256 MB PC133 costs dkr 876,- (app $115).

This is CAS3 memory, but very few (haven't found one yet) vendors in Denmark sells CAS2.

Memory has dropped like a stone in the US as well, with the prices being the same for PC-100 and PC-133. I saw a 64meg module for $15 at a computer show this last weekend.

Just make sure that your MoBo supports it !!!

Some need a BIOS update to take 512MB sticks, some need ECC RAM to take 'em that big, but some just refuse to work with 'em.

Besides that you should look for a decent RAM Disk app (RamDisk98 is working quite well) and assign TMP and TEMP to it ... makes you go humm !

If you're crazy enough you could also put your Windows swap file onto RAM Disk and let your system really fly.

        Good luck,

If you're REALLY crazy enough you could make a RAMdisk big enough and copy the windows directory to it on bootup and run windows from the RAMdisk!

            Hey Maggi...

Why put the swapfile on to ram... Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having more ram?

Just set your system to use all available Ram before touching the Swap...

I know some programs require a swapfile to run.. but they just need it there... they don't have to use it.

              I'm not too sure, cbman.

Sometimes Winblows is just a bitch and some progs cannot be held back from using a swapfile, so it might be worth a benchmark I guess.

My board should support it, it's a Soltek SL-75KAV (VIA KT133A chipset).

As for all the suggestions, keep 'em coming

erm... wasn't there a problem with win9x and more than 512 mb ram?

Yep! win9x can't use anything past 512Mb, and you'll get Insufficient memory to load Registry and/or Windows errors appearing on startup

                        Just installed the memory.

I have the strangest problem, I have 512 mb installed, but Windows 98SE won't recognize my Kyro unless I limit it to 256 mb. No problems in Win2K.
