Not only is it not as bad as you might think, but...

WHY DO PEOPLE QUOTE THE REGISTER?

    They make shit up, people.

    They... wait for it... LIE.

Stop getting panicky over lies printed in the Register. Ok?

I read something similar to this on another site.

I think all they are trying to do is make it easier for people who aren't tech-heads to maintain their PC.

I seriously doubt that you would be forced to upgrade drivers on a machine.

I've a got a Win2k server sitting here, and the Windows Update site tells me there are new drivers available for the RAID controller. Am I going to download and install them? Am I heck. The machine works fine as it is, so why risk it by installing new drivers?

You are still likely to be able to install non-certifed drivers, like the raft of beta nVidia drivers, but you'll get warnings like you do in Win2k.

All in all, I shouldn't worry too much. If the Windows Update site forces some drivers on your machine that you don't want, I guess MS are going to have to support you. That's a burden I don't think they want to undertake.

        Sigh!!!

The Register presents a humourous side to the industry. Some of the things it prints are true and others are spoof. Anything that is delivered is always delivered in a humourous manner.
The site is mainly humour. Don't take Bofh too seriously.

No, they don't lie - they just post up any rumours that they hear, and aren't frightened to do so. I like their site as you often hear of the latest rumours flying around the 'net on it.

I know half the time it isn't true, but often some of it is.

Yeah it's just a background service. You can turn it off. It's no big conspiracy.

My problem with the register, btw, isn't that they print rumors - it's that they call them NEWS.

If they made a distinction between what is fact and what is fancy, it wouldn't be so bad.

As it is, you have to treat EVERYTHING they write as a distortion of reality, because some of it is and they won't delineate.

Sorry, journalism was one of my core areas in school.

Well, here's an article from a site I do trust:
                      http://arstechnica.com/wankerdesk/01q1/wpa-1.html

If Microsoft goes through with this they'll have a huge support mess on their hands.
