  • Opinion needed from owners of Radeon

    Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a Radeon and pushing G400 to my secondary system.
Is Radeon's image quality as shape as a G400 at 1600x1200 and above ?

    Regards.

No, the Radeon's Image is not as sharp as the G400's. If you use a trinitron tube, the effect is even worse.

What OS are you planning on using?

      Hello Joelau
I'm not sure what a g400 looks like at that res but i replaced one of mine with a DDR Radeon and attached a Sony G500. The 2d picture quality at 1600*1200 is very good. I am hoping to move the sony and pc into my computer room within a few days and so I should be able to do a comparison between the 2 cards. I am hoping that the G400's 2d image will be better.

      regards Michael

from what i heard the kyro II's image quality is rather good, and its faster than the radeon 64ddr in most games (if gaming is what you want) and way cheaper.

Rags: I intend to use it for my Sony G500 monitor, with BNC cable. OS=WinMe.

mdhome: Hey we have the same monitor! Appreciate if you could post the comparison result soon. Thanks.

Topha: Actually i want the All-in-wonder Radeon for tv input. But at the same time do not want to lose the image quality at 1600x1200.

          Regards.

Using WinMe should be no problem with Radeon, the drivers are decent.

I have a Sony G400, and the image quality of the Radeon at that resolution is not bad, but just not as good as my G400.

Rags, For the Radeon, any double image problem, or a shadow around every character ?
              Are you using 1280 or 1600 ?

Previously i had a ATI rage pro. Quite poor image quality at 1600. I can see a shadow around every character. That's why this time must be sure of the quality before i buy another ATI product.

              Regards.

                Well,

With the new Radeon drivers(7097) the Radeons 2D quality is so good that at 1024x768x32 that I usually use, I hardly see any difference between my Radeon 32 DDR and my MAX with a Sony 200PST(The MAX might be 5% sharper in text). As for the triniton problem its now long solved and for those who still have problems there is a registry hack for it.

Anyone know how well the Radeon SDR Overclocks? I can get @ a reasonable price here - $185can /w tvout, whereas I can get generic GF2mx /w tvout for about $150canadian.

                  Thanks in advance,

From a few posts on the Rage3D forum the SDR seems to overclock quite nice to 200MHz.

In 1024x768x32 there is no difference between the G400's and the Radeons 2D here. At 1600x1200 the G400 seems slightly better, but then my monitor (17") can't really display those resolutions in sufficient quality anyway, so you might get different results on a high-end 21".

ATIs drivers have a few quirks but nothing too big here (AMD-system) in Win98SE and Win2k - definitely not much more problems the G400 gave me.
TVOut quality is good and working without problems even when the system is used as a TV-only system. However I didn't try the VideoIn functionality of my RadeonDDR64 VIVO up to now (my hauppauge works nicely in Win2k) but I've seen some complaints about this on the Rage3D-fori so if capturing is your main interest, you might first want to check there - especially in Win2k where many cards have problems, including the Marvels.

Yes, at 1600X1200, there is a shimmering shadow around text, but it's not enough to really rate it poor.

erm... why is/was the radeon's image quality worse with trinitron tubes? (note: no need to explain what a trinitron tube is, i know the basics )

I don't know the reason, but this effect is just amplified on my Sony, and other Radeon users complain the same about using trinitron tubes.

hmmm, I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040u. I believe it has a trinitron tube in it and I dont see the shimmering you are referring to. Since I'm here, IMO, the Matrox's 2D quality is slightly(mostly just text, looks sharper on the G400) better at resolutions => 1600x1200.
