Although 2D quality does not receive nearly as much attention as it once did, we still feel this one of the most important aspects of a video card. Considering the majority of computing time for most people is spent in Microsoft Word or Internet Explorer, we want to ensure that the nicest 21" monitors out there will be supplied with a crisp image.

Hercules' 3D Prophet 4500 gets a small upgrade from the first generation KYRO. Whereas the original KYRO processor sported a 270MHz RAMDAC, the KYRO II bumps that number to 300MHz, supporting up to 1920x1440 at 75Hz refresh rate. We were able to run at 1600x1200 at 75Hz for a couple hours with no problems reading fonts - something that cannot be said for many of the GeForce2 GTS cards that have passed through our lab.

It's to bad the git of a reviewer follows that up with this absurd statement.

Judging video quality is less of an objective chore, and more of a subjective art. Generally it is agreed upon that ATI leads the industry in video quality and performance, with other manufacturers offering less complete decoding solutions.
At least he acknowledges that 2D quality should be a concern. But his knowledge of the subject is brought into question by that statement.

I believe they're referring to DVD decoding and the HT folks generally agree that the Radeon is the current leader in that area.

Yes, Sharky is one of the few reviewers that comments about 2d display most of the times. Maybe because he is one of the few reviewers with something more than half-decent monitors

Wow! A reviewer commenting about 2d quality- Something we have recognised here at MURC for years

Maybe the Kyro will make people realise that 3d isnt everything and that it takes a lot to produce a well balanced graphics card.

As it stands, I think the G400 is better balanced than many of the newer cards on the market.
