I found a thing about the Xbox, and thought this was interesting.

Abrash helped Carmack program Quake. I read Carmack was into some of Abrash's books on 3d programming. Abrash apparently left Microsoft to join id software.

He definetely wasn't the sole programmer, which is what that quotation makes it sound like.
