  • Wow! A real Sun Workstation for $1000

Look out wintel, here comes Sun. They've got a real, brand new workstation available for $1000 US. The new Sun Blade 100 (not the Blade 1000) just got released the other day.

Read more about it here http://www.sun.com/2001-0227/sunblade/

And you can add non-proprietary SDRAM to this guy. Looking at Crucial's prices, you can add an extra 512MB of ram (2 256MB modlues) to that guy for less than $250 US.

Now if only they came with Matrox video integrated in them. Unfortunately, they've got some POC ATi chip as the default integrated video.

Edit: To be a bit more specific, they are integrating the ATi RageXL, 8 MB SGRAM, onto the mobo. This POS cannot even do 1600x1200 in 24 bit color! Wasn't my ol Matrox Millennium I 8MB able to do 1600x1200x24? I know for sure the Mil2 8MB could.

Edit #2: I just got word back from my Sun sales rep. For those interested, the Blade 100 uses 168 pin PC133 SDRAM ECC unbuffered. I just ordered 2 sticks of 256MB CL2 from Crucial for only $98.99 a stick, and they've got free shipping! I also went for the $1000 web special from Sun.
