  • LAUNCHkaos corrupts Windows Installer :(

I am receiving this error message in Windows 98SE:
"The Windows Installer failed to install the program associated with this
file. Please contact your system administrator."

I recently installed LaunchKaos (http://www.pocketkaos.com/lkspecs.htm). One
of the known "bugs" with the program, as stated here
(http://www.pocketkaos.com/lksupport.htm), is that the windows installer may
get corrupted. They posted a solution to this problem, by downloading the
Windows Installer Cleanup Utility for Win9x, ME
(http://www.pocketkaos.com/files/9x-msicu.exe). However, I am not having any
success in getting it to run.

When I double-click on it, the cursor turns to an hourglass, then it returns
to a normal cursor - as if the program tried to run then was "stopped".
Something similar happens when I try to uninstall any of the microsoft
office programs. I've also tried re-installing Office 2000, but when I
insert the CD, the autoplay sound comes on, but the menu never appears.

I'd like to solve this problem without having to do a clean install...
    TIA!

The only thing i can think of is :
Try using tweakUI to restore systemfiles etc. , it's under the repair fan
You can get tweakUI from microsoft.com.
This soulution might not work and if it doesn't i'm affraid there is no other option left but to reinstall.
As a last resort you could try to searching through the microsoft knowledge database for an answer.

You could also try running RegClean
      also from microsoft.com

Thanks for the tips, I tried both but didn't help. I also tried these several ideas from the microsoft knowledge base, but they didn't work either.

I'm trying a reinstall right now, hopefully that will solve the problem..
