  • Athlon overclockers, please take a look

    Hi guys!

Just switched CPU to a Classic A800mhz one, and successfully ran it up to 1ghz. The cpu doesn't "feel" hot at all (i've got no sensors on my mobo), compared to what it did when i ran my 500mhz (500 core) at 650mhz.

I do however have one small concern. I can play q3, UT, or anything else at full speed for hours. Without a glitch.

BUT, when i tried 3dmark2k, it just suddenly rebooted. I tried again, the same thing. Hmm, so I tried an old TBL demo (stash), and the same thing happened (once). This is the only times it has happened, but still little to often for me. What's wrong?

The CPU now runs at 1.9V, it did just as good on 1.85, but at 1.8 as is the standard for 1ghz's (i think) it didn't work very good at all.

I've also tried several cpu benchmark programs etc. and they all work great(and they should load the cpu 100%, right?).

Normally i would just discard it as a heat/core problem, but compared to what i've learned from my old 500 CPU this isn't at all the same. My old system would simply HANG when it got clocked to high, not reboot.

    Suggestions?

    Power supply?

It doesnt sound heat related. Is your Cache being used more on synthetic benchmarks than real games?

Dont know sorry, but keep on trying.

An OS related problem would be my first guess.

Well, I doubt it's OS related, since it didn't do this shit below 1000mhz.

It's a 250W Athlon approved PS (Enlight), it doesn't seem to be lacking power, all drives etc. spin up nicely.

        Please get back to me.

OK then... what do you have your L2 latency set to? Is it set the same as your next lower freq where it's stable?

Also at that speed and voltage setting the cpu conumes WAY more power than you may realise... OC'd@650 it'll pull around 64 odd watts, but an 800@1gig with a 1.9Vcc_core you're talking upto 100 watts! I'm currently running a AMD certified 300w Powerman PS. It's not the greatest, but then it's been getting the job done since last Oct in my system. You might need at least <$50 replacement and make sure to get the one with the highest 3.3v current capacity. (this varies widely!)

Think I solved it... By some reason I thought 1000mhz's to use 2/5 cache divider. When I found out they didn't, I switched down to 1/3, and it seems to be running fine now.

I have no idea why I didn't think of it before. Ah, well...

I have a Classic 850 and its currently running at 927 @ 1.7v. I was running it at 935 but it froze in 3dMark2000. Cache is still 2/5. Previously it did boot into Win98 at 1002mhz 1.7v but was real unstable. Guess it should make it if I up the voltage and reduce the cache divider.

Anyone know how much effect there is in reducing the divider but upping the mhz?

Set it for 1:3 L2 cache latency and 1.9Vcccore. The difference in benchmarks will be negligible by dropping the latency and will be raised by the increase in mHz.

Sounds similar to the problems I've been having. Since doing a complete reinstall of my system:

Athlon 700 Classic cache @ 1/3 & Northwind Computers GFD
                        Alpha P7125 HS/Fan w/arctic silver
                        Abit KA7, TY bios
                        256mb Mushkin PC133 SDRAM RAM @ Turbo, 133mhz, CAS2, 4-way Interleave
                        G400 32mb w/ 6.21 drivers
                        Aureal SQ2500 w/ 2048 drivers
Ovislink "Realtek" NIC w/ 3.80 drivers
                        Lucent Winmodem w/ 5.70 drivers
                        Maxtor Diamondmax 40+ HD
                        AOpen 52x CDROM
                        Razer Boomslang 1000 w/ 2012 driver
                        Win98SE
                        Directx 8.0
                        Via 4.27 4in1's

With this setup I can only get through 3dMark 2k occasionally at ANY overclock speed. It runs the bench just fine at stock speed. I checked for heat problems by running Motherboard Monitor and then running a CPU torture test for a few hours, but the temp never got over 73F. I also ran a bot game of UT for a couple of hours at 850mhz without any problems.

Last night I installed a new 120mm intake fan.

I can run at 900mhz while surfing and such with no problems. I ran Prime 95 overnight, but it was locked this morning. I ran a computer game of Age of Empires II (one of the games it's been crashing in) and it locked up. I'm running another computer game of Age @ 850mhz now. All core voltages are at 1.95v

I don't know what the deal is.

Looking to get some updated 2001 input on this topic. My 850 Bird used to go 1GHz with the 10X, then after flashing from 1005.03e beta to the finals (1005a/1005b), she'll only get there the hodwhey... 105FSB with 9.5X=997.51MHz. Posts at 1050MHz, stops at splash screen, no video or bios at 1GHz using 10X now. I think my 300W PS needs replacing with a 400W Enermax .

While she's pretty stable/cool, ever since I tried to install the latest VIA 4in1 (v.4.27v)I'm getting annoying little "Cannot load VxD,error=0000002" errors in Windows that can be clicked away, but they multiply like rabbits on the screen... I counted 34 one time when I left it alone for a day. Wish I was smart enough to fix that without having to reinstall WinME. This is a 24/7 machine.

Anyway, got to 4092 3D Marks, still can't figure out how some guys are getting G400s to the 5xxx range. Anyone?

First launch 3Dmark, then launch SoftFSB and bump the bus up. This is great when you can toggle from FSB 66mHz or underclock prior to... and then rock it to 150mHz+. Then run the benchmark. To improve the score further, only run the first two scenes (benchmark minimum).
