  • Intel CPU question

    Hi

I have an abit be6-2 m/board and having been looking at cpu's lately...

    1) but what is the difference between :

    coppermine and non-coppermine....

    2) and within coppermine there is a further distinction:
slot vs. socket? (can I use either with my motherboard)

    -III Coppermine
    P-III-600 /256k FS L2 ( FC-PGA, 100mhz )
    and
    P-III-600 /256k FS L2 ( slot-1, 100mhz )
    and lastely...

    3) some cpus advertise a 133mhz speed, is there a noticeable speed diff if I do use 100mhx ram...or will it matter at all?

thanks for looking at my 3 part question.

    Hi Bongo,

    1. Coppermine has 256KB full-speed L2 cache
    Non-Coppermine P3s are named Katmai and have 512KB half-speed L2 cache

    2. if you use a Scket-2-Slot1 converter (aka SlotKet), you can use either of both flavors (I use a Socket=FC-PGA Coppermine in conjunction with ABit's SlotKet!!! in my old Slot1 Asus P2B-S)

    3. your Mobo must be able to handle 133MHz FSB as well as your RAM, so I guess you should skip that one and go for a 100MHz Coppermine, plus, the OCability is lower when already starting @ 133MHz FSB

    4. you should consider grabbing a Celeron 2 (like I did), which are basically P3 Coppermines with half of the L2 cache disabled. I did so and using a good SLotKet let's you fiddle with things like VCore and it shouldn't be too hard to reach 100MHz FSB (from default 66.6MHz) to get a really good bargain.

    My Cel-566 runs @ 952MHz = 112MHz FSB ...

    Cheers,
    Maggi
