    GDI bypassing
Some graphics card manufacturers are taking shortcuts called "patching" to improve performance numbers in benchmarks running under Microsoft Windows 98 and Windows ME. Basically, they are going into the Windows code and sending data to the driver earlier than if Windows managed it completely. This has a tremendous and unfair impact on performance, and also renders the system unstable and prone to crashing. Microsoft is opposed to this practice and plans to detect patching in the future so that cards that do this fail WHQL certification tests. The following application was developed by Matrox to detect GDI bypassing.

    File: gdispy5.exe (15.5 KB)
ATHLON XP 2600; Abit KX7-333Raid; 1GB SDRAM DDR PC-3200 Corsair XMS; Matrox Parhelia AGP 256; HITACHI 7K250 250GB; HITACHI 120GXP 120GB; HITACHI 120GXP 60GB; Sound Blaster Audigy 2; Plextor DVDRW PX-716A; Plextor CDRW Premium
