  • Windows 2000 ICS with Win98SE Clients

I've been having a devil of a time getting Win2K ICS to work. I have several Win98SE Clients and none can connect through the Win2K box to the internet. The network is functional, with all computers being able to see one another. (Including the Win2K machine). Read Secondary machine specs for complete specs: Yes, all of these computers exist and are in my possession.

    It's probably something stupid.

    The Situation:

Windows 2000 Professional (w/SP1) with dual NICs (Intel 10/100 on the cable modem, Adaptec Single 64 on the LAN)

ICS is enabled on the Intel adapter, and the Adaptec has an IP address of 192.168.0.1

I did notice one odd thing: On the TCP/IP properties of the Adaptec card the "Use the Following DNS server addresses" box is checked (The Obtain DNS server address automatically button is greyed out).

I think it boils down to thisa: What DNS server address should be used?

Of course, I could be simply giddy from lack of sleep.

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

BTW: Multimonitor works normally (i.e. like Windows 98) with more than one adapter in Win2k. The list of supported Multimonitor adapters is fairly small, however. I had to adjust a jumper on the #2 adapter to get it to work correctly in Win2K.

    Some simple options:

Have you got user accounts for the clients on the Win2000 machine?
Can the users access shares across Network Neighborhood on the Win2000 machine?
    Can they ping 192.168.0.1?
Are they set to connect to the Internet via the LAN?
Have you tried booting them up after the Win2000 machine has booted (so that DHCP works)?

    Paul.

You need to have the DNS server listed on your Windows 98 machines also. Did you run the wizard to share your connection to the internet on your Windows 2000 machine (from Routing and Remote Access)?
      Workstation Specs:
      Pentium 4 2 GHz, ASUSTek P4T-E i850, 1024 MB PC800 RDRAM, ATi Radeon 8500 64m, Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer, 3Com 3C905TX-C NIC, Western Digital 80g ATA100 HD, Sony 16x/40x DVD-ROM, Sony CD-RW 175S/C, 19" Sony 420GS, and Windows XP Pro.

You can get the DNS server IP by running IPCONFIG /all from a command prompt. Then see what DNS server the connection to the internet is using.

The Intel 10/100 adapter is connected to the cable modem: all "automatic" boxes are checked, and this connection does indeed work correctly to access the internet (Like as I write this message on this machine.). As per instructions this t=is the shared adapter.

As a side note, all of my machines previously were using this same computer, with the same hardware to access the internet via Windows 98 SE ICS.

The Adaptec Single 64 adapter is the one having problems. When enabling internet connection sharing the LAN adapter is no longer using automatic IP settings: it's address is: 192.168.0.1, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

in the box just below the ip address it asks you to use the following (blank) DNS addresses. I have no idea what these values, if any, should be.

I can, from any Win98 computer on the LAN, ping 192.168.0.1. The WinsK machine can ping any Win98 machine on the LAN.

Running ipconfig /all gives the following:

          C:\>ipconfig /all

I guess it might make more sense if I presented it this way (from c:\ipconfig /all):

                Ethernet adapter Adaptec DuraLAN:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :_WHAT GOES HERE?_
                Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Adaptec ANA62011/TX 64-bit PCI Fast
                Ethernet Adapter

                DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
                IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
                Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
                Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :_WHAT GOES HERE?_
                DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :_WHAT GOES HERE?_

                Thanks!

I don't think you need a DNS server for your internal network, as you don't have one. Did you set the DNS server to your Windows 98 Machines? Use the one that your external lan card is using.

I finally got ICS to work under Windows 2000. I ended up formatting and reinstalling the OS from scratch. Not the most graceful solution. I did seem to notice one common denominator with those who are experiencing problems with Win2K ICS: they upgraded from a previous installation of Windows 98.

Being a complete git, I wrote down the exact steps necessary to get ICS working under Win2K. If anybody is interested, I can post it here.
