I thought I read that Intel is not allowed to make DDR-SDRAM chipsets until 2003 or something, as stated in the contract they signed with Rambus last year.

I also thought they were considering to sell P4 bus-licenses to VIA and ALi, so that they could make DDR-SDRAM chipsets for the P4.

Intel practically owns RAMBUS, I'm sure they can do whatever they want.

They'll probably put another trans-crasher hub on in a further effort to push the discredited shambus.

well, according to the latest reports, it's more the other way round: Rambus dictates Intel what to do concerning it's memory-choice for chipsets

Speaking of Shambus, check out some of this email I recently recieved. Very interesing stuff I thought:
We welcome you to this issue of the "Simmtester.com" Memory Newsletter !

In this July 2000 issue -

July 2000 - Lots of things have happened within the last few weeks. The most significant is the settlement between Toshiba, Hitachi and Rambus on the synchronous memory patent. This essentially admitted that Rambus can now charge license fee for anyone using SDRAM and DDR memories. That includes YOU and ME. However, that is not the end yet. The battle between Rambus and the Memory Industry has just begun.

            * Must Read News Articles:

Hitachi settles with Rambus on patent dispute http://www.simmtester.com/page/news/...ws.asp?num=846

Rambus said each license settlement would be different http://www.simmtester.com/page/news/shownews.asp?num= 851

Rambus’ patent claim can have broad implication http://www.simmtester.com/page/news/...ws.asp?num=858

            DRAM industry vs Rambus? http://www.simmtester.com/page/news/...ws.asp?num=904

July 5, 2000 - Intel finally drops the law suite against VIA Tecnologies. Through an arrangement, Intel is letting VIA to
compete on the PC chipsets and also on XX86 CPU's.
Sorry if this was too long, but I thought the info would interest some folks here.

Hmm. Wonder if that last bit means we may eventually see Via clones of Intel's CPUs?

What I don't understand is how the hell can Shambus charge licensing fees to SDRAM and DDRAM makers. Did Rambus patent something that we don't know about?

No, Rambus patented things that we know about. Search the forums for a link to the article (last few weeks).

Perhaps I should have said "something that I don't know about". Thanks for the tip.
