Wireless internet connection? What is available

My father would like to set up a way for him to surf the internet on a laptop PC over a wireless connection. He has a Dell Inspiron 3500 with USB/Parallel/Com ports built-in. The dedicated internet line is installed upstairs while my father would like to surf the net on the main floor. The only PC in the house is the laptop.
Are there any wireless solutions out there? Maybe something with a base port that transmits to adapters or something?
Would Intel Anypoint work in this situation? Thanks in advance.

One modem company, I think it's Olitec (www.olitec.com ? Site's down at the mo), oli- something anyway make a modem which has up to 7 remote 'modems'. (One base station and up to 7 users, one at a time, of course). Check them out.
