  • Strangest CD problem I ever had...

This one has me utterly foxed, I hope someone here might have a clue about the cause.

Ever since I built my machine I've had an odd problem with CD audio in Windows. CD audio in games, or any other kind of streamed media is fine but playing CD audio appears to take up 80% processor time. (ripping it is also fine)

    My system:

    Celeron 366@550
    128Mb 133MHz Memory
    Pioneer 6X DVD drive (IDE)
    Yamaha 6416 SCSI Cd burner
    Tekram 395U PCI SCSI card
    G400 8-)
    MX300
    ISA NIC

I thought initially I had just screwed up winamp, but any CD player slows the system to the speed of a drugged snail.

No IRQ conflicts as far as I can see (Had to do some fiddling to get the SCSI card happy)

    Win98 SE, Win98 pluspack

    Any ideas?

Although I never encountered this problem, it COULD be the bad SCSI implementation of Windows 98. I've also had very odd problems with my Adaptec 2940UW and my Plextor Ultraplex-32.

Just make sure you set the right speed of the CDROM in the SCSI BIOS (probably 10 or 20MBps), and set sysnc transfer on in the device properties in windows and in the SCSI BIOS (also known as synchronous transfer). But even if it works, it can behave odd after some time again. Disabling the sysnc in windows may then solve the problem again for a certain time....

it seems a very odd solution, but windows just has a verty bad SCSI implementation (win2k SCSI implementation is much better)

I'm assuming that you are using the pioneer for cd playback?

Check the firmaware of your dvd drive. There is a known problem with revision 1.15 taking up to much processor to play audio cd. Changing to 1.16 or back to 1.14 fixes it.

I'll check that firmware revision tonite, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it's the latest firmware 1.16.

Did anyone do decent Vortex2 drivers for win2K yet? I think that's all that's holding me back at the moment...
