  • Did you ever get everything just right, then decide to add new hardware?

    So, my old config was rocking along quite stable, and then I had to add new hardware.

    I was booting off of a Promise Raid setup, with a partition dedicated to video capture. I kept reading that it is recomended for vid cap to keep the boot drive separate, for optimal stability and performance. So, being an industrious fellow, I arrange a swap for some stuff I wasn't using for the scsi controller and drive listed below.

    Well now, the P3B-F scans for boot bios from isa to agp, so here is what I did:

    <table width="30%" border="1" height="276">
    <tr>
    <td>AGP</td>
    <td>G400</td>
    <td>INT 10</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td>PCI1</td>
    <td>RR-G</td>
    <td> </td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td>PCI2</td>
    <td>Fasttrack66</td>
    <td>INT 15</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td>PCI3</td>
    <td>Adaptec</td>
    <td>INT 11</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td height="29">PCI4</td>
    <td height="29">SBLIVE</td>
    <td height="29">INT 5</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td height="22">PCI5</td>
    <td height="22"> </td>
    <td height="22"> </td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td>PCI6</td>
    <td> </td>
    <td> </td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td>ISA</td>
    <td>3com modem</td>
    <td>INT 4</td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    I forced all the PCI IRQ's here, and note that the SBLIVE shares with the USB. This all seems quite stable.

    Problems I've introduced:
    My cheapy NIC won't work here. I put it in slot5 and the computer won't boot. Perhaps it doesn't like to share? (ACCTON CHEATAH 10/100).
    My USB is now a little funny, where it wasn't before. (this is a clean install). Specifically, If I boot with my scanner plugged into the USB hub, it gives me a yellow asterisk. If I uplug the scanner, when I plug it back in, it is identified as an UNKNOWN USB DEVICE. the scanner is a microtek slimscan C6.

    The floor is now open for discussion.

    BTW, anyone know why I get all the blank space before my table when I insert HTML?

      I don't know about the space problem !
      Check your PCI speed, the promise might be picky!
      You are driving your poor cpu a bit high, go easy on it and see if it works better!

        Believe me, this is solely related to the NIC. This system was running sans the adaptec card with no probs. Realize that the PCI is in spec on this board at 133FSB.

        This was "plug in NIC, install drivers, reboot, no boot, take out NIC, boot just fine".

        As I write this, I've installed a kingston KNE110TX in place of the ACCTON, and no probs. It was just a card that didn't want to share an interrupt.

          try every thing perfect could not force the thing to lock crash explode, then i had to try 98se and nothing but problems. finally give up on se and returned to 98 only to for get the combination of drivers and system settings that i used for it to be rock stable. (after 3 fromats and freash installs i finally remembered (NOT TO INSTALL THE IRQ ROUTEING MINI PATCH from amd becuase it was cuaseing the lockups (some how i don't know) and now every thing is ok again.

            Ah yes...
            I remember my days with a via chipset mobo. (SS7 FIC 2013)

            Every time I upgraded hardware, drivers or added a new game, I had to play 4-in-1 driver keno, and find the right combination of busmaster, gart, usb etc., etc. drivers.

            (Notice I'm clinging to my BX mobo, inspite of some missing features )

              As a matter of fact, I will tempt fate later today...

              I found an excellent deal on a Quantum Obsidian X-24...and it just so happens I have just ONE free slot on my primary rig...you know I have to fill it with something.

              The Voodoo2 is not the latest or greatest anymore, but, it still is damn fast enough for most of us. And it has a fairly decent OGL ICD (Matrox: DOH!)...so it will make a fine ensemble with my Marvel G200-TV.
