  • K6-2 400 o/c to 450 - 2.8V OK???

I've overclocked my AMD K6-2/400 successfully to 450Mhz. All works fine and I have a little fps-increase in all games :-)
But I had to set the VCore to 2.8V!!! to get windows booting. The standard Volt-setting is for 450Mhz: 2.3V and for 400Mhz: 2.2V
The temperature goes not over 60°C with a standard-fan. I think this a bit hot, but not dangerous.
But is the high VCore-setting OK??????
    What could happen???

    Hey Surfer:

That's very much like my rig. I've run the thing up to 476. :-) Same thing: had to go to a 2.8v core.

I got a LOT of heat, and this setting wouldn't stay stable unless my case was off.

I'd sure recommend a big custom fan and heatsink on that puppy if you're gonna keep it running at 2.8.

I've since dropped back to 2.6 v and am OC'd at 428, stable and case on with a big Alpha, and an extra case fan.

    Hope this helps.

60ºc? And that´s not hot? how are you getting this value? Motherboard termal probe? If you aren´t actually reading this temp from a probe attached to the cpu core you can bet your cpu is running 10-15ºC above that.
I wonder how you got that stable.
Try to get it into the 40-50ºC range.

        2.8 V to get a K62-400 to 450?

Thats funny my K62-350 needed 2.3 to get to 400.

At work we hawe an amazing K62-333 that makes 450 @ 2.3 Vcore!

On the other hand we have K62-500 that are much hotter than k62-550 at their standard wolt and fsb, multiplier etc, etc

2.8V? That's a lot. You'll probably be fine, but I'd hate to be the 2nd owner of that CPU.

Personally I would consider 60 degrees dangerous. You do not want your CPU getting above 50.

I was lucky and got me a k62 400 at 450 and only need to bump it to 2.3. It will actually go to 475 with no probs.

As Nuno says, the onboard probe is not very accurate for reading the actual cpu heat.

A question for you also. Are you taking this reading when you are idle? Or after running a game such as Q3? You can expect your cpu to jump another 10-15 degrees while playing games.

              AMD k6-3 400mhz@450mhz
              Epox mvp3g2
              g400(16meg)
              cpu temp=33c\91f
              voltage=2.5v(2.4v.default)
When I first overclocked, had to set voltage to 2.7v.After running it at this voltage for 2-3weeks was able to drop the voltage down, now runs stable at the 2.5v setting.
You could use more cooling for sure!
Suggest that, and after running it a while at the higher voltage, try dropping it down to see if it will work.(2.6v,for example)
Over all AMD chips are pretty durable, but play it safe and get that temp down!
Bixler probably has at least 14 fans he'll sell you!

i reached 63°C after playing quake3. i wanted to clock down to 400, but windows-explorer crashes then. i must run now with 450, that's funny!!! in germany it is today about 26°C and the cpu-temp is 60° in idle mode. so i put off the chassis and put a fan (a big one, one for a room) at the side of the pc. i'm getting really crazy. tomorrow i'll buy a better cpu-fan. any hints for this????

i hope to get on a lower voltage after a few weeks running. have to try...

                thanks for your replies
