  • SpaceX Mars presentation 2: IAC 2017

    We've been told to expect some surprises, especially wrt alternative uses.

    This week at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Adelaide, Australia, SpaceX CEO and Lead Designer Elon Musk will provide an update to his 2016 presentation regarding the long-term technical challenges that need to be solved to support the creation of a permanent, self-sustaining human presence on Mars.

        Asked and answered, SpaceX is going to the Moon. They aren't kidding.

        "Finer" aspect ratio.
        Same height, but 9m wide?
        4 smaller legs
        Winglets
        Split main window
        Engine bells more retracted
        Crane in action
        (Tesla?) Space Truckâ„¢

              It'll replace Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy in 5 years.

              1200s of tests on Raptor

              40s-100s burns to date, limted by the tank

              40s is what's needed for Mars landings

              200 bar chamber pressure, heading north

              150t to LEO w/100% re-use
              9 meters wide
              31 engines
              4500t vehicle

              Ship,

              40 cabins
              825 m3 volume, larger than A380
              860t O2
              240t CH4
              4 RaptorVAC
              2 S/L Raptors, only 1 needed
              1,700kN S/L thrust
              1,900 kN VAC thrust

              Tanker and ship mate tail to tail using launch attachments. Ullage thrusters transfer the props.

              ALLIGATOR FAIRING ON THE CARGO SHIP!! HE IS A BOND VILLAIN!!

              Land on and launch from the Moon without refueling.

              Production of first ship starts in about nine months.

              Mars,

              2 cargo: 2022

              4 cargo & crew (2+2) in 2024

              Earth: "Fly to most places on Earth in under 30 mins and anywhere in under 60. Cost per seat should be about the same as full fare economy in an aircraft. Forgot to mention that."
