  • Microsoft Linux... kind of?

It's an internal only build used for Azure Cloud Switching (ACS) only. But the fact that Microsoft admitted to not just using, but developing their own Linux implementation, is causing the tech world to fall over in shock.

I do not find this at all surprising, actually.

        No.

ACS is designed for Azure only. It's made to be interoperable with third-party vendor equipment, which is pretty much all Linux based. So instead of reinventing the wheel they just used Linux.

Does this mean there could be a Microsoft Linux in the future... it's possible. A lot of the Microsoft code frameworks are being open source ported to Linux, most notably .NET. That would make publishing Microsoft apps in Linux pretty easy. But the privacy trends Microsoft has been following may not mesh well with the Linux community so it may not be a great idea. That and Windows is the company's bread and butter still.

So while there may not be a public MSFT Linux build in the near future, I don't doubt that there will be MSFT apps running on Linux sometime soon'ish.
