  • System configuration suggestions ?

I'm putting together a new system for a friend of mine, and would like some comments.
He'll be using it for surfing, MP3, MS Office, and a bit of gaming.

    Celeron 500
    ABIT BE6
    128 MB PC 100 ram
Maxtor DM 40+ 30 GB (already bought, seemed the best buy right now, cheaper than 27 GB IBM 34GXP)
ATI Xpert 128 16 mb (old card of mine)
    Cheap 17" monitor (any suggestions?)
Cheap IDE cd-rom (not sure what brand)
    HP 9110i CD-RW
    Cheap Soundcard (his old one)

I've thought about a K6-2 500 as it would be quite a bit cheaper (and save $ on motherboard and case), but I think the Celeron is better.....

    ------------------
    P3 500, 224 MB ram, G400 16SH,
    Maxtor DM 40+ 30GB, IBM Deskstar 16GP 10GB, Maxtor 4320 13 GB
    SB Live Value
"That's right fool! Now I'm a flying talking donkey!"

    P4 2.66, 512 mb PC2700, ATI Radeon 9000, Seagate Barracude IV 80 gb, Acer Al 732 17" TFT

Celeron is definetly faster in floating point calc (i.e. games) and as fast as K6-2 in integer (i.e. winblows and ms office).
So going celeron is almost a win-win situation.

Unless you could get a cheap Athlon

My opinion would be to buy the IBM HD instead of the Maxtor.

Yeah, but the IBM's are hard to find right now. Some sites who have a few are charging too much for them. Probably why they have some.
