  • PIII upgrade! I'm in hardware junkie heaven!

I finally broke down and replaced my Celery 400 with a PIII 550E. Like, wow man!

I'm @ a computer show here in town yesterday, and I cough up 250 even for a slot one 550e (SL3V5). This is boxed, with the standard HS&F.

Go home, swap processors, boot at 550 with my existing install.

Power down, raise FSB to 133, and reboot. I immediately am greated by the tag line that says, PIII 733. I have reached nirvana.

the only down side is that I plunked down 40 bucks for a net-n-dudes celery cooler about a month ago. I had anticipated buying a FCPGA PIII, which the fan would have ended up on. Oh, well, I'm sure I'll find a use for it.

BTW, I also picked up a second 13.6 WD hard drive (7200+2MB), so I can do the Promise U66-to-FT66 conversion, when I get the time and the soldering iron hot.

For the first time in my computer life, I'll actually be somewhere near the top of the food chain. And the satisfying thing is I never plunked down three grand to do it. I built my first computer from bargain parts, then upgraded here and there to get the job done. Sigh, if only my career were in the same shape .

    I'm one happy junky...

      my ram is crucial pc133 cas3 (7.5ns).
Other than that, this is out-of-the-box.
stock voltage (1.65), cpu temp is between 40 and 44 degC, (39-43 at 550).

I did basically the same thing, but got a PIII 650E, it was cheap enough (got it for $300.oo from a friend who owns a computer store). O/C's that thing to 806Mhz and never looked back ( and I think i'm hardly pushing it.). But what really made a difference were the 2 18GB Seagate Cheetah's that now grace my case, gotta love that speed, although they run very very warm, and had to invest in a cooling solution for them, plus I lost all 5 1/4 inch bays to throw them in. I think I need to change to a Tower case cause I have very little room left, and i'm sure the case gets hot.
          PIII 600E at 800Mhz, Waiting for G800, til then Voodoo3 3000, Asus P3B-F at 133FSB (ain't none better!), 256MB PC133 Memory, 2 Seagate 18GB Cheeeeetazzzz.

P.S. Last night I soldered a resistor to my Promise Ultra66, and now have two WD HD's in a RAID setup.

I think I've overloaded my brain...
I still have a little saliva at the corner of my mouth.

I'm beginning to like companies like intel more and more. Add a fan here and there, a little bit of thermal paste, flip the switch and voila! 50% more speed added. When it comes to o/cing, intel can satisfy all needs. Plus the trusty BX/ZX chipsets that work without installing any additional drivers or altering settings... hmhmhmhmmm I'm just raving now...

ARGH! Promise Ultra66 are sold out almost everywhere!
