  • Marco Polo (late 2014, Netflix, Weinstein Co.)

Wow....Netflix partnering with the Weinstein Oscar machine.

Netflix is adding another drama series to their growing line-up of originals. The streaming giant has handed a 9 episode series order to Marco Polo, which is being produced by Harvey Weinstein’s The Weinstein Company (TWC). The series is set to premiere in all territories where Netflix has a presence – including the United States, Canada, the UK & Ireland – in late 2014.

Created by John Fusco, Marco Polo follows the famed explorer’s journey as it takes him to the center of a brutal war in 13th century China, a world replete with astonishing martial arts, sexual intrigue, political skullduggery and spectacular battles. TWC is producing the series with Dan Minahan, John Fusco and Harvey Weinstein serving as executive producers. Joachim Ronning, Espen Sandberg and Dan Minahan are attached to direct. Production on the drama is about to get underway at the new Pinewood Studios in Malaysia and will feature a global cast.

The official series order comes months after word first leaked out that Marco Polo, which had originally been developed for premium cable network Starz, was in contention for a series order at Netflix. With the pick up Marco Polo joins a long and growing list of Netflix originals which includes House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Sense8, 5 new Marvel themed series, a drama from the team behind Damages and Lilyhammer, which was just renewed for a third season.
