Sign: Absolutely 'no hand grenades' allowed in Detroit police office

Detroit— At first glance, you might wonder if it's a sign of the times. Or maybe think the sign maker was taking no chances.

But the sign on the door of the Eastern District office of the Detroit Police Department makes it abundantly clear: No hand grenades allowed inside.

The posting warns that those who enter the police office will be searched and can't carry firearms. It then states: "No weapons allowed of any kind (including, hand grenades) …"

It also warns against knives, pen knives and fingernail files, more common weaponry. So why single out hand grenades?

An after-hours call to the office wasn't immediately returned, but records show the same police office was evacuated in May after an apparently well-intentioned woman whose father reportedly was a military veteran found a stash of grenades in the back yard of her home.

"The resident … sought to turn them in after not knowing what to do with them," according to a May 26 story on detnews.com. So she took the bag of military explosive devices down to the local police station.

Nearby businesses, including a dental clinic and pharmacy, were evacuated for more than an hour and prisoners had to be temporarily relocated, reports at the time said.

Turns out that sign maker may have had reason for the warning.
