  • Tasered prisoner escapes courtroom

In all all manner of gun posts we who carry pistols (and a few others) have had to argue that tasers were not a reliable defense option. More often than not it goes in one ear and out the other. Now there's an example of what we've been talking about - not everyone goes down and they often still have the strength to be dangerous.

FAIRFIELD — A routine court case turned dramatic Wednesday, authorities say, when a man appearing on a probation-violation charge assaulted two bailiffs and escaped, then tried to commandeer two vehicles.

Christopher Lee Ruffin, 25, of Hamilton was recaptured after fleeing from Fairfield Municipal Court.

Judge Joyce Campbell had just sentenced Ruffin to 90 days in jail when he escaped around 3:45 p.m. despite a bailiff’s attempt to stop him with a Taser stun gun, police said.

As probation officers and police chased Ruffin, he tried to climb inside an occupied vehicle at an apartment complex, but “the driver was able to lock the doors,” police said. He did get inside a car with a woman and a 2-year-old child inside and was “attempting to get the driver to take him out of the area” when police arrived, a news release said.

Fairfield resident Bob Kramer saw police arrest Ruffin on Patterson Boulevard, in front of a Dollar Tree s

“They had him surrounded. He looked dangerous. He’s a big, muscular guy,” Kramer said.

Butler County Jail records show that Ruffin , was being held on charges of escape, two counts of assaulting a police officer, two counts of kidnapping and resisting arrest.

The bailiffs who suffered minor cuts and bruises in the scuffle, Dave Rotroff and Robert Potter, have both returned to work today and are fine, said Ed Roberts, court administrator.

It is not known when Ruffin will be arraigned on the new escape charges, Roberts said.

Ruffin remains at the Butler County jail today.

This is the second time since 2007 a suspect tried to escape from Fairfield Municipal Court.

In June 2007, Harvey Johnson Jr., 32, who had been indicted on an aggravated murder charge for the death of his girlfriend, was in court on unrelated traffic charges when he lunged at a deputy bailiff in an attempt to grab his gun.

He was quickly subdued. Johnson was then charged with aggravated robbery and escape.

Roberts said he plans to review a videotape recording of the escape to see if there are ways to improve security and learn from the situation.

“We will definitely put more security procedures in place if we think that will prevent it from happening again,” he said. “We have good security in the building. There’s one way in and one way out, but if someone is hell bent on escaping they are going to try. The only thing you can do is make sure they are not successful. This time they did get out of the building. He ran out the doorway and had a full head of steam. He was just running really fast. It’s the first time we’ve had this happen.”

A deputy bailiff stationed at the door, Robert Davish, “body-checked” Ruffin in an attempt to stop him but failed, Roberts said.

“(The bailiff) knocked the guy down, but (Davish) jumped back up,” Roberts said.

Campbell has not responded yet to a request for comment.
