  • Overclocking Athlon....

I have an athlon 500@550 thanks the the K7M FSB adjustments in the bios. But i've decided that I'm ready to take the next step... ie. remove the casing, change multiplier settings.
I was wondering if someone could tell me how to find out what week my Athlon is from, what the core is, and recommend any "goldenfinger" devices.

The week number is printed on the top edge of the plastic CPU cartridge. Look for something like K7500xx9952xxxx - this being a 1999 week 52. To find out the core speed you will have to remove both the plastic case and the metal heat transfer plate, and read what is says on the core.

I'm using a FreeSpeed Pro card which is very good.

      ------------------
      System 1:
      Micro-Star MS-6195/K7Pro Motherboard, AMD Athlon 550 @ 950MHz (1/3 Cache, 1.75v), Using NinjaMicro FreeSpeed Pro, and GlobalWin FKK32 Cooler, 256MB PC-100 CAS2 SDRAM, Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead Max, Creative Labs Soundblaster Live! Player 1024, Netgear FA310TX 10/100Mb NIC, IBM 22GB ATA/66 7200rpm HDD.

      System 2:
      Asus K7M Motherboard, AMD Athlon 500 @ 750MHz (2/5 Cache, 1.7v), With GlobalWin FJK50 Cooler, 256MB Crucial/Micron PC-133 SDRAM, Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead, Matrox Rainbow Runner G-Series, Linksys LNE100TX 10/100Mb NIC, Promise FastTrak66 ATA/66 RAID Controller, Creative Labs Soundblaster Live! Value, 2 x IBM 13.5GB ATA/66 7200rpm HDD’s (RAID-0)...

Keep in mind that the week # on the case doesn't mean much. AMD mixes up their cores on purpose.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

Yeah, I just opened the case last night. I have a week 47 one... there is a sticker thta says
          0100034255060 AFC A
          219947103481

so I'm taking it to be a 550. I don't really feel like removing the heat plate just yet...
I was hoping that the A at the end meant I got a .18 micron ( but the outside case has a C).
