I don't know about the Hitachi, but my Toshiba 1212 (a 6x unit) works very reliably with DMA turned on. I've never had a problem. Its even on the same cable as my Maxtor UDMA66 hard drive.

Anybody out there have any experience with using DMA on a Hitachi?

Definitely Toshiba over Hitachi. I've got an ol' 4x (or is it 6x) Hitachi drive (GD-2500?), and it sucks because it has a connector for a digital output, but it is a total decoy...it is not supported. You only find that out by failing to use it, and then dig up on Hitachi's web page to see that it is not supported. I had thought that it would have been better because it had 512K cache.

I've also got an ol' Toshiba 6X which does real nice. And the digital out connector on it actually works! My Tosh only has 256K cache, but really that is plenty.

        Yeah,

I too have the Toshiba 1212 (6x) and this machine is ready to go from the first second, no problems whatsoever with DMA turned on.
