  • AMD gives up SS7

So far it has been only a rumour, but now it's official: According to the German c't magazine, AMD has dropped the K6-2+ as well as the K6-III+. Both will be available as mobile processors only. (However, those mobile CPUs will work on motherboards which can supply 2.0 V core voltage, but I doubt they will be available at reasonable prices). Bad luck - I hoped one of these CPUs would be a fine upgrade for my old K6-2/300...

Makes sense to me, the only real competitive product they have is the Athlon.

As soon as some company makes a Socket 7 to Socket A converter, us SS7 users will have a way to upgrade to T-bird. Let's just hope this is soon.

RAB, forget that dream, the bus architecture makes it impossible.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Oh well, I better pick up a K6III-400 to replace my old K6-2 350 before they are all gone like the 450's.

hell, i guess P5A users are lucky =)

the Asus P5A supports 2.0v to 3.5v core voltages... yippee! now, i'm selling this thing if the K6-2+/K6-III+ are over $100... any takers? i'm already on an Athlon 550 @ 950 (1/3 cache divider w/ Alpha 7125), so no biggy... just need a way to speed up my Win2k server (K6-III 400 @ 520). do you think, by the time it is released, it'll be more than $100? the reason the K6-III 450 doesn't have a strong foothold is because it is insanely priced.
