Fact is that sequels do better on average than original screenplays. I think it's because viewers see little difference between a movie series and a TV series - familiar characters, premises, etc. Waiting for the next film is like waiting for the series hiatus to end.

I found a great 1000 greatest movies list on They shoot pictures don't they and noticed I haven't watched many of those, I'll probably start going through Fellini.

Otherwise the problem is how movies are made. If you want chances for success in USA you need famous actors and script that appeals to enough people and even this is risky. This requires high budget and any risky stuff such as sci-fi, horror, fantasy, artsy, intellectual doesn't get high budgets (Intellectual is the kind where average IMDB posters ask if the ending has been cut-off as the guy didn't get the girl, her parents haven't gotten back together and school bully hasn't been punished.) And with high budget productions studios play it safe and make stuff like Avatar which is a good movie but due to playing safe and wanting to appeal to masses looses chance to become really great. Still some great stuff comes out of Holywood as well.

In Europe socialist governments fund movies as they see them as means of promoting and preserving national culture and with less risky state funding directors have more creative freedom. This doesn't prevent bad movies but those that become famous outside their country are usually great.

Don't know how funding in Asia goes but stuff that comes abroad from Asia is great too: Kiarostami, Hong Kong, Korea and especially Japan. 21 out of 50 top animations on IMDB are Japanese.

I really enjoyed "Shutter island" last year, and I think it was quite a hit... Then you had Woody Allen's "Whatever works", which was also very good.

It is strange that some movies seem to escape the remake/sequel craze: the last starfigher, ferris bueller's day off, weird science, flight of the navigator, frequency, ... many youths in their 20s don't really know them. Heck, even Ghostbusters would allow for a remake: a familiar name, theme that opens possibilities (action/comedy/...), or the B-movie Thrill seekers. And there are many more. Don't get me wrong, I don't want remakes of them, but it surprises me it is not even tried; yet we have quite a number of incarnations of Batman, Spiderman, Superman, ....

Of course, if we look at the movies so far, many stories have been made... It becomes increasingly more difficult to come up with original ideas.

I agree: some films might lend themselves to a remake due to many reasons: good story but maybe outdated, quite a long time ago, different perspective (darker, ...).

But Ferris Bueller 2? Where is he going to get his day off? From the retirement home? They might as well dig up Bernie and have another weekend...

That's a great link. I perused the first 500 and I've definitely seen 80+%. Not likely that I would see the other 20% of them, since they don't have lame translations (I'm often doing other things while watching any video and I can't deal with subtitles only)

I think a big problem in movies is reaching a point of saturation, like it's really hard to be unique and unfortunately there are times when the concept is right but the execution is a failure.
Sequels can be a safer bet if the predecessor was good enough at $$$.
