  • W2k W98 dual boot, dual pc, no f*** ups

    Hello everyone

I have just ordered myself a BP6 MB along with 2 366@550 (guaranteed) with the intention of running W2k (it's supposed to have good support for 2 Processors) Until i get it fully up and running on W2k i would like to keep my existing W98 on there aswell and i don't want to lose any settings or programs. I have heard that NT4 requires that it be loaded on the primary partition of the hard drive, which is where i currently have W98. Does w2k have this restriction and will i have to move w98 to another partition to get around it? Can i completely move W98 without screwing it up?

Oh yeah and how do i do a dual boot thing?

    Cheers Geezas!

Haven't used Win2k yet, but this is from my old setup with NT4.
The primary partition has to be FAT16 if you want to dual boot. You only have to store the main boot file on that partition, the rest of NT can go on it's own partition or drive. NT will install it's own bootloader, it'll allow you to chose which OS is the default. Other option would be to use something like BootMagic, but I had no trouble with the NT loader.

W2K does not have that particular restriction. You can install it on your D drive and, if you run the setup from Windows 98, it will default to that configuration.

You can use FAT32. The setup program will give you a choice of filing systems.

Windows 2000 figures out all by itself that you want to dual boot. When you boot, after your BIOS does its thing, Windows gives you the option to boot into the OS of your choice. If you do nothing for 30 seconds, it just boots into Windows 2000.

It's all rather elegant. I was surprised at how easy it was.

        Thanks people!

I read the bit about it installing itself alongside W98 on another site afterr i'd posted my question. I am seriously looking forward to receiving my gear now.

I'll let you know if there are any problems

        Cheers

At least w2k apparently lets you choose OS's. Every time I reinstall Win98, it automatically overwrites the boot sector. I have to boot off a CD to fix things.

Once i get w2k i don't expect to have to reinstall 98 ever agaim. I intend to use w2k as my main os and w98 as the os i use for games that don't run on w2k. Eventually i will wipe 98 altogether.
A friend of mine has linux, i might give that ago as well.
