  • hard drive question

    which should be faster?

27.2GB (I dont have the model number handy) Maxtor UDMA66 5400rpm 2 meg cache

    or

    4.5GB ST34520LC Seagate SCSI SCA-2 7200rpm 512k cache

I just got the Seagate drive and I'm about to buy a Tekram DC-390U2W for it. According to the manual the Seagate's max xfer rate is 40mb/s. I'd think with that and the higher rpm it would be a high performance drive, but if the drive isn't that fast compared to my Maxtor I don't know what I'll do with it. Anyone have any ideas or experience with a Seagate drive like this?

I wouldn't think there would be that much in it. The 40mb for the scsi isn't a burst rate but a continous transfer rate. The 66mb for the udma is a burst rate and they rarely operate above 25-30mb per second. The ace in the whole for the udma drive is it's cache but as both drives spin the same performance should be about equal in most cases.
