  • The history of Soccer in the US

    Interesting...
In the 1920s, soccer was on the cusp of becoming a major sport in the United States. Then it all crashed and burned.

In the 1920s, soccer was big in America. Not big in the way that baseball was big (this was the era of Ruth and Gehrig) or college football was big (these were the days when Ivy League rivalries played out as violent eruptions in the mud), but at its height, the top American soccer league had tens of thousands of fans, featured some of the world's best players, and looked set to challenge the fledgling NFL in the competition to supply the nation with a post-October pastime. Along the way, this country's early soccer entrepreneurs also managed to alienate the United States from the international soccer community, lay the groundwork for America's greatest moment of World Cup glory, and generally create one of the most bizarre and fascinating might-have-beens in U.S. sports history.

Yeah and unfortunately it will never be a big sport even in Canada...
The ironic thing is (speaking about us Canadians) is that the majority of us are from countries that live on soccer! businesses slow down when the world cup is on because all the folks gather in bars and cafeterias to watch the games hehe.

But to actually have a team and compete? Canada and US won't even make a dent and will never happen.

The theory is US and Canadians want quick high scoring games filled with fighting and intensity like Hockey and football, whereby in soccer the game is too long and boring to many.

I actually like hockey, but will be one of those who will watch ever world cup soccer game until it's over

Wishing Team USA to go as far as possible. I believe they could suprise everyone as a lot of people underestimate them. Their women's team is top drawer, time is now ripe for their men's team. The success of the team would boost the profile of footy (football or soccer for you guys:P ) in USA
