  • PIII 550 crash, PII 300 don't???

    Hi,

I just bought a brand new boxed PIII 550mhz(not coppermine!), and everytime I really use it, I get four types of errors:

    1) Spontanous reboot
    2) Crash to desktop with no error
    3) Crash with BSOD
    4) Just freeze

3D applications can start, but after 5 min. I get one of the four errors. Other applications such as Internet Explorer and Norton AntiVirus 5.0 makes the PC crash as well.

I have installed a brand new 300watt PSU, because I know the PIII need a little more power than PII's - no luck!

Now I have reinserted my old PII 300 into my system and everything works fine.

Could it be a processor problem or could it be memory or the Matrox G400???

Please help me and thank you in advance,

    Christoffer

    -------------------------------------------
    My system:
    PSU 300 Watt

Boxed PIII 550 Mhz(not coppermine) or boxed PII 300 Mhz

    128 mb PC100

    15 GB IBM HD

    Aopen AX6BC Rev.1.1 motherboard
Bios R2.36 - the PIII is identified properly during boot.

    Sb Live! LW 3.0

    Matrox G400(Vanilla) DH 32mb
    PD 5.41/5.30/5.11 - no difference

Windows 98(org) and DirectX 6.1, 7.0, 7.0a all produce the same errors.

I'd suggest trying a different stick of memory.

      I would update the Bios

      Mega
      K6-3 400Mhz@450Mhz
      G400 16MB, 192MB Ram and so on

        Hi,

And thanks for the quick reply.

I think I will try another stick of memory.

I cannot update the bios further, because doing so, it renders my HD unbootable!

It should work fine with 2.36 or 2.47 (I have not tried 2.41). After flashing your BIOS, you need to go into your SETTING and reset all setting including the hard drives. You might want to mark down the old setting before flashing so you will have a frame of referance.

It sound like you are haveing a problem with a setting at the 100MHz FSB of the 550 that was not a problem with the 66Mhz FSB of the 300. Perhaps your PC100 memory is CAS3 and is set for CAS2. That would be fine at 66MHz but cause problems at 100Mhz. Just one example.
