  • Whats the best board for a athlon and where to buy in the uk

    Hello

Just had a let down on my order for a 500e CUmine, Intel F**cked up on shipping, so i am now hunting for a Mobo for a Athlon 600, 1£190 now. my question is what is the best board for this chip, ie most stable etc, and what speed on average will i get out of this chip and board combo.

    Thanks

I have had 3 athlons and K7M boards from
    www.overclockers.co.uk

The k&M is probably not the most stable, but they sell others too, they also have a good message board......

I would try here first if shopping for pc bits in the UK... they have a very reliable service.

Only get the MSI MS-6167 MB! It is by far the most stable/trouble free SlotA MB out!

You might want to wait a little until the kx133 boards start coming out. At least until the reviews are out (tonight I hope). you can see them at www.slota.com

Congrats on your decision to go Athlon. They are a truly kick ass system.

I've got an Asus K7M mobo with my Athlon. It has been very stable and reliable on me except for one thing: I had to install the forceagp2x.reg registry hack to prevent the w98/K7M/G400 plaid death on cold bootups.

I do not have any first hand experience with any other Athlon boards, so I'll defer to them for their reviews.

Being in the states, I don't have a clue as to where is the best place to buy it in the UK.

MSI MS-6167 is stable as the rock of Gibraltar. I couldn't get it to bluescreen during testing with a 600 Athlon, Marvel G400, SBLive! MP3+, HP usb scanner, AVA 1505 and Yamaha 8x4x32 SCSI burner. Oh and 5 dropped frames in a 17 min 720x480x30fps video capture. Yeah and I installed it with one 15GB partition on the 15GB IBM HD.

The Biostar M7MKA board is the best/most stable Athlon board I've ever used.

I'd disagree with Greebe, I think that the MSI-6167 sucks. Stable/trouble free? not the ones I've come accross!

Rogue, well I'm sure as with anything else, there are a few bad apples here and there... but I have tested them all (currently out) and will stand by my descision.

What problems have U incurred... ???

                        Hi Greebe,
Yes, obviously a few bad apples might get released (I think I got them all!), but on several MSI-6167 boards I noted the following problems:

Machine powering up for a second, then powering off again when switching on power to the power socket the PSU is plugged into (i.e before you even touch the case's power switch).

Generally less stable with overclocked Athlons (obviously you would disagree with this one ) than boards such as the Asus K7M and Biostar M7MKA.

USB problems - Machine refusing to boot if a USB mouse is plugged in and (when no PS/2 mouse is present). USB scanners (I tried Epson and Umax models) sometimes cause windows protection errors, or fatal exceptions while scanning.

I was perhaps a little harsh in my post above. The board does not suck, I just much prefer the other boards I've mentioned. Although the others do have their faults - K7M's silly ATX power connector position, and not liking anything above 750MHz CPU's for example.

BTW: What core does your Athlon have that you are currently running at 850MHz+?

                        Chris.

I'm running my wk 42 500mhz at 650, stable as hell! on the msi... Don't see no reason to push the speed/stability until there's a game that makes it stutter! I think that will be a while...As the best graphics game is probably still unreal..and how old is that??
