  • 'Magnetic electricity' discovered

Researchers have discovered a magnetic equivalent to electricity: single magnetic charges that can behave and interact like electrical ones.

Interesting given the discovery by HP of a 4th electrical component beyond the inductor, resistor and capacitor: the memristor.

It has a memory of its past; when you turn off the voltage to a circuit the memristor remembers how much was applied and for how long. Also interesting is that the smaller the memristor device the stronger the effect. Looks to be a major advance in electronics, memory design and in artificial intelligence; it could vastly simplify the construction of massive neural networks because synapses are memristive in their actions.

In contrast to the postulated spin ice memories they operate at room temperature. An added plus is the material used: doped titanium dioxide - the pigment used in white paint.

HP is working hard at integrating them into silicon circuits. If the succeed the balloon really goes up.
