  • system requirements: how do different generations compare

    Hello,

If the minimum system requirement for a piece of hardware reads:
-Intel Pentium 4 (1,8 GHz or higher)
or (for another piece of hardware)
    - 2,0 GHz Intel or AMD CPU or Intel Centrino CPU
    - Netbook with Intel Atom CPU

Would my laptop then support it?
    It is a Pentium M 1.2 GHz...

A netbook with Atom will be 1.33GHz or 1.6GHz (I think).

1.2GHz will be a little slow.....

      Yes, my fear as well...

But in general: the second spec states 2.0 GHz Intel or Intel Atom... seems a bit confusing to me... Is there perhaps some list on the net that shows relative performance over different generations?

For instance: would my dual Xeon system suffice? It runs at 2.4 GHz, but is 6 years old... It is bound to loose out on new instruction sets and whatnot...

If it requires a 1.8 GHz P4, then your Dual 2.4 GHz Xeon system should be sufficient. Also, a 1.6 GHz Atom is about as fast as an 800 MHz-1 GHz Pentium-M, so I think your 1.2 GHz Pentium-M might be fast enough as well. But in all cases, you are pretty close to the low end of the range they have recommended.

          Yeah, I know...
The devices are usb dvb-s tuners, and according to our sysadmin, it should be comparable to playing a dvd (which is possible on my laptop)... I don't care about HD on it, nor about running their software (have W7 on the laptop): it would just be for temporary use until my other pc can be used.

I have a usb ATSC tuner that we use on Becky's laptop sometimes.
Her laptop is an old Dell 600m with a 1.2ghz P-m and ATI 9000 vid.
            Works just fine*.

            * PC-wise. It's not a very good tuner. I think it was $15 after rebate.
