Chrysler 200C EV: Surprise Plug-in Concept at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show

DETROIT— Chrysler kept at least one vehicle in its EV concept lineup as a surprise for the media this afternoon. The four passenger 200C EV, is based on a shortened version of the rear-drive full-size car platform that underpins the Chrysler 300C, Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger.

Chrysler says the 200C EV is powered by a plug-in, range-extended hybrid powertrain, similar in concept to the Chevy Volt. The Chrysler system here is said to develop a total of 268 hp. And the company says the concept can scoot to 60 mph in 7 seconds, travel 40 miles in electric-only mode and cruise for a total of 400 miles, thanks to that gasoline engine acting as a generator. And it can be re-charged using a 110-volt or 220-volt outlet.

With five EV concepts at Detroit this year, it seems Chrysler and its ENVI, the company’s electric and plug-in hybrid development division, is serious about brining EVs to market soon.

But the 200C EV is more than just a concept. We think it’s a thinly disguised look at the next-generation Chrysler and Dodge large sedans due in two years. If so, we think Chrysler may have another hit on their hands. Regardless of powertrain, this is one sharp looking sedan. —Ben Stewart
