  • Lausanne has a new Metro

Inaugurated yesterday, this Metro is a state of the art engineering feat. Totally automatic, climbing a 12% gradient without rack or cable. 6 km long ~375 m altitude difference.

More than that, it has inspired a new burst of urbanism to make the city better: P&R facilities at Vennes where 2 motorways meet with the main road North to Berne; new low-cost housing by a station; new hi-tech research park at the last station, accent on bioengineering, with one of the world's advanced cancer research establishments 100 m away; city centre partially remodelled with de luxe shopping between two stations and escalators between the levels; green spaces and parks where the old funicular cut the lower part of the city in two, etc.

It goes into full service next month, 2 months ahead of schedule.

Along with the new waste-to-energy plant, the staid little old city of Lausanne is pulling itself up by its bootlaces into the 21st century.

heh, I couldn't help it but compare this to Warsaw Metro - first plans in 1925, ready for consumption in 1995, first line only three times longer (city over 10 times bigger)

(though it starts to get better recently...)
