  • Mars orbiter catches Phoenix on its 'chute

The Mars Research Orbiter's HiRise camera caught the Phoenix lander on its parachute while it was landing (see insert). A very cool pic that shows the power of MRO's instrument package

Very cool pic Strange shape parachute?

Looks like Pheonix could easily have found itself on a steep slope.

No, it was at high altitude when that was shot and the oblique projection placed it over the crater.

Plus I imagine "strange shape parachute" is in reality not fully deployed one/first one opened after entering atmosphere? - for breaking while still "supersonic"? ("" because I don't know what is the speed of sound in Martian atmosphere; I imagine it to be quite low due to very low pressure)

That was indeed the transonic drogue. The mains were a 3-chute configuration.
