  • Woohoo, upgrade time ;)

So i have all the bits to go Quad finally, thanks to my bro in NY who gave me a Q9450.
So then i just had to get the mobo, and migrate my current PC bits to it.

Hopefully it should go well...gonna be using the Ultra 120 instead of an extreme version, since the latest test i saw, last week, only sets it 2-3 degrees better at cooling...
Also gonna try and migrate the 2x1gb and 2x512mb G-Skill DDR2-800 memory...

Keeping the Audigy2 also, The ADi card is nice, but i get humm from some of the other integrated chips, and the Audigy2 is currently fine...

I'm not looking to hit the roof with this one , just upping it from 2.66 to 3.2.
1333 fsb to 1600, nothing major.

My graphics card will be the limiting factor for quite a while...8800gts-640mb

Hopefully i'll be back later with some benchies
Maybe even some piccies if my old Finepix still works

After a few attempts to install to Sata, and not having a floppy disk or drive handy, its on a ide drive.

    All good though !!!
Up and running at 1600fsb, and 3.2GHz.
    18C idle, 29C 100% load on 4 cores
Chipset is rather hot for me, 37 idle and 47+ full load...

Have a 4cm fan ready for that in a mo...

hmm actually that card still beats other every card except the top of the range from Nvidia and AMD so IMHO its not going to be a limiting factor enjoy your games

Yes, i do. But i keep thinking of the Pentium D at 5GHz and the 30minutes of great fun that gave me.
And that also has to remind me of the the mind blowingly slow months I had to run at lower than stock speeds, since I had damaged something...
            Not this time.
The graphics will be going back up to 621 when I find a game to play...

currently reinstalled my i955X/Pentium D to be a server...got to bed finally at 5am this morning...i tend to get carried away.

The 4cm fan keeps the NB below 42C now at full load.

PC Probe is reporting the NB voltage to be 1.62V...1.6V on my last chipset almost killed it, and it ws watercooled...is this normal for X38 ?

My brother just sent me an email, and his X48 mobo is 1.62V also, and hovering around 70C !!!!
it has roughly the same cooler i think...

Well, i'm happy its not overvolting or anything...

edit : he's using a Zalmann 9700 cooler, and has a couple of degrees more than me for CPU temp, Q9450 also at 3.2GHz...damn these chips are cool...

                  North Bridge Voltage: Auto, 1.25V ~ 1.85V in 0.02V increments. 1.25v standard

Are you guys running it at Auto voltage? The Auto setting likes to use a lot more than it really needs.

edit: that is for the X48.

post from ncix forums for the Q9450:

Just got a Antec 900 case built with this about 2 weeks ago. System runs great at 3.2Ghz w/ a Thermalright ULTRA-120 Extreme 6 Heatpipe Cooler LGA775 Heatsink & a Noctua NF-P12-1300 120MM fan

(400FSBx8.0) Vcore is 1.25v/ North Bridge is 1.45v/ DDR core is 1.9v

Few things on Auto, not much though.

Idle is 20-25/ Full load is around 35-40. No system crashes or freezes in any games in a few days testing now.

AFAIK we are both running at AUTO voltage for the NB.
tbh, my bro knows not much in the HW dept., and I have quite few years of computer tech in my head.
I'm gonna reboot and try lowering the voltage.
at least to 1.5V if possible.

                      see you soon I hope

Dropped it to 1.45V in the BIOS, so has my brother, and i'm now at 33C idle on the NB, and 36C full load.
                        Now thats a lot better

                          Good to hear

I was already starting to think up creative ways of mounting a fan over the northbridge... seems like I won't have to now... anything <40C is excellent

I popped the 4cm fan in just behind where the onboard network connectors are.
That way it sits just behind the cpu radiator, and the hot air gets sort of taken out the back.

I have an antec 900 case now. All the case fans are on medium, which is quite loud.
2x120mm front, 1x120mm rear, and 1x200mm top at full speed, which feels like 800rpm...
the 4cm fan is about 15-20mm thick, from a Flex-ATX PSU, 12V, pretty loud, but not more than anything else in the system, including the 24/7 100% 8800GTS-640Mb fan (stock fan).

Before i overclokc any more I will have to have a reason.
I haven't got any games that need me to overclock, and crysis doesn't count.
I spent hours setting up my system for that, so i could play in 16x10 with the best graphics, at 25fps. And then you find out its in two parts...

Crysis is pretty much GPU limited beyond 3ghz-ish on a Core2 anyways. Always good to know that you can push your CPU up to 3.5ghz+ for when things do start to become CPU limited. I will probably go up to 450fsb/3.6 for 3dmark then drop back to 3.2 or so. At least until I get another new video card in a couple months.
