Week off ice has little to no effect on sizzling Wings
DETROIT -- Maybe, just maybe, this conference final isn't a complete mismatch. Maybe the Stars aren't as dumb and dreary as they look. Or maybe -- strongly consider this possibility -- the Red Wings can make anyone look downright daffy these days.
The Wings were borderline abusive Thursday night, and if Dallas goalie Marty Turco had Joe Louis Arena demons before, what must possess him now? The Wings have the look, the one we've seen before, the one Turco sees in his nightmares.
Would a week off stop the Wings' roll? Haha, good one.
Would a tight-checking team like Dallas stop their roll? Not yet, not even close, not in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.
The Wings churned on with ruthless abandon, belting the Stars 4-1 and looking very much like a team that knows where it's going, unconcerned about anything in its way. The Stars were so tepid, so slow, so mindless with their penalties, this barely had the feel of a showcase game.
The Wings struck from every direction, of course, including a goal from the unstoppable Mule, Johan Franzen, his 12th of the playoffs. By the time Valtteri Filppula scored late in the second period to make it 4-0, fans were derisively chanting "Tuuuur-co!" while checking their parking stubs.
"We talked a lot about how we wanted to get our feet going right away," Nicklas Lidstrom said. "We'd been practicing for three days and we were anxious to play, anxious to get back to playoff hockey."
So, the only thing more dangerous than energetic Wings are anxious Wings, huh? There's more hockey to be played, supposedly, but the trends are unmistakable and remarkable.
